Form analyst, RIC CHAPMAN, looks at every runner in Saturday’s Group 1 Spring Champion Stakes with horse racing tips for the first four. Read on to see how he maps this great race and his final thoughts. Good luck!

1. ELLIPTICAL (1) 1×432

T: Team Freedman / J: Blake Shinn  (56.5kg)

The more this young Dundeel horse races, the more impressive he becomes. Absolutely stormed home last start from near midfield in the Gr 1 Caulfield Guineas to grab 2nd place. Wins if the race is 100m further. Gets that extra trip here is super, super fit and has the draw to receive the run of the race in about 5th on the fence. Rates extremely highly.

2. PROMITTO (5) 11×7603

T: David Atkins / J: Josh Parr  (56.5kg)

On the quick back up here after a really solid 3rd in the open Gr 3 Craven Plate here last week over 1800m. That should top him off perfectly. Has always shown a great deal of talent and goes into this 5th up and trending upwards. Have in your numbers.

3. SHARP ‘N’ SMART  (8) 2124×11

T: Graeme Rogerson  /J: Hugh Bowman  (56.5kg)

Is the form horse and being 3rd up he is the fit horse here too. After a handicap win in NZ he came here and landed the Gr 3 Gloaming Stakes over a mile on a very heavy track. He was flat strap at the end of it to just beat Matcha Latte and Williamsburg. Is pretty smart and tough. Trip is his biggest issue but if he runs it out he looks the one to beat.

4. WILLIAMSBURG  (2) 14113×8513

T: Gerald Ryan & Sterling Alexiou/ J: Kerrin McEvoy  (56.5kg)

Such a professional horse. Is already a stakes winner this track and is a Gr 1 placegetter. Shows up in the wet too. Rattled home from a mile back to just miss in the Gr 3 Gloaming over a mile last start behind Sharp ‘N’ Smart. Super fit now and runs like this trip will suit a great deal. Big show.

5. MATCHA LATTE (7) 534×122

T: Mark Newnham / J: Tom Sherry  (56.5kg)

This is a really good racehorse. And he is ready to win a race like this. Has shown he can match it with these running a Gr 3 placing in  the mud as a juvenile then this time up was 2nd to subsequent Gr 1 winner Golden Mile, before last start charging late to fail by a nose in winning the Gr 3 Gloaming in the mud over a mile. Will rattle the cages of those involved in this.

6. OWEN COUNTY (11) 1310×9376

T: John Sargent / J: Keagan Latham (56.5kg)

Smart type but just doesn’t seem to replicate it at this level. Has had a few stakes races thus far and failed to flatter in any of them. Is trained here and was beaten 5 lengths in the Gr 3 Gloaming last start, weakening late. Not keen.

7. CONQUEROR (4) 1×275

T: Chris Waller /J: Jason Collett  (56.5kg)

More than handy type who should, with age, develop into a top liner. Right now, however, he looks to be a length or so behind the very best in this race. Was doing best work late when a pleasing 5th, beaten 3.5lengths by Williamsburg last start over a mile. Place at best here.

8. COPPLESON (3) 1147

T:  Chris Waller  /  J: Brenton Avdulla (56.5kg)

After two low key provincial wins to start his career he came to town and ran a cracking 4th in a BM 72. Up to Group level last start when beaten nearly 6 lengths by Sharp ‘N’ Smart in the mud over a mile. This looks harder so may struggle late.

9. MANZOICE  (12) 2192

T: Chris Waller / J: Willy Pike  (56.5kg)

Is the dark horse in this field. Only lightly raced and failed at only run in stakes grade when a plodding 9th to Golden Mile in the Gr 3 Ming Dynasty over 1400m but has since run 2nd in handicap over 1800m. This too may be a bit rich but he has a future.

10. BUNKER HUT (6) 32215

T: Michael Freedman / J: Regan Bayliss (56.5kg)

Provincial form was strong in much weaker grade culminating in a strong Kembla win over a mile in maiden grade. Stepped straight up to stakes class after that and after being ridden on pace, ran a game 5th to Sharp ‘N’ Smart in the 1600m Gloaming on a heavy track. Has talent and if allowed to settle off the pace may run a huge race.

11. SHE’S EXTREME (10) 4217211×362

T: Anthony Cummings  /J: Glyn Schofield (54.5kg)

Very exciting filly. Loves it wet and is a Gr 1 winner at this track in the mud over a mile. Showed she is close to another big win when 2nd to Zougotcha in the Gr 1 Flight Stakes over a mile here last start. Represents different form lines to all of these but has shown she is very capable and looks the one to beat.

12. RENAISSANCE WOMAN (9) 614×671

T: Bjorn Baker /  J: Rachel King (54.5kg)

Good filly who may well be a really good filly. After being safely held in the Gr 1 Flight Stakes in the mud, she went south and stormed home to win the 2000m Ethereal at Gr 3 level. Is very fit and we know she can finish her races off. Chance.
