Horse Racing Tips – Golden Eagle

Form analyst, RIC CHAPMAN, looks at every runner in Saturday’s soon to be Group 1 the $10m Golden Eagle with horse racing tips for the first four. Read on to see how he maps – he has included the potential for a damp track in his thoughts. Good luck!

1. OVERPASS (3) 121557×266

T; Bjorn Baker / J: Rachel King (57.5kg)

Very smart galloper who is dropping in class here following a great 6th, beaten just over 2 lengths in the Everest. Is very fit but his concern is the trip. He’s never won beyond 1200m and when he raced at 1400m back in April, he weakened badly over the last 150m to run 7th at Gr 1 level. If he can get great cover which he should, he may surprise as he is very quick.

2. CONVERGE (16) x33120x690

T: Gai Waterhouse & Adrian Bott / J: Regan Bayliss (57.5kg)

Hasn’t come up like he was last prep but still he rates a show because he gets a quicker track this time and he wasn’t all that far away at Caulfield in the Gr 1 Toorak. Is super fit and if the real converge turns up he can really fly home late.

3. IN THE CONGO  (4) 210x329x62

T: Gai Waterhouse & Adrian Bott /J: Tim Clark  (57.5kg)

This is the interesting runner. The trip is his main concern but he has won at 1400m. From this gate he can choose to just sit behind the top speed and he is very fit. Hit the lead in the straight last start in the $2million Sydney stakes over 1200m and was grabbed on the line by Rocketing By. Being calm early is his only hope.

4. VILANA  (24) 21x11518x1

T: James Cummings/ J: Nash Rawiller (57.5kg)

Is the emerging star. Resumed from a spell and came home like a train to claim the Silver Eagle, the traditional lead up race. Beat Mr Mozart that day quite comfortably. Is very capable, given how he runs, to get this trip comfortably. The gate is his issue. He probably does go forward but may end up three wide which would make it hard. If he gets cover though – big danger.

5. I WISH I WIN (14) 38x123x115

T: Peter Moody / J: Luke Nolen  (57.5kg)

Is one of the most improved runners in the land. After finishing hard to win the 1400m Testa Rossa at Sandown, he fronted up in the 1600m Gr 1 Toorak and got too far back yet rattled home to finish 5th. Was very impressive that day and does look one of the hardest to beat as he really can run home hard.

6. MR MOZART  (23) 9x87111x22

T: Team Hawkes / J: Brenton Avdulla (57.5kg)

Interesting galloper.  Won three Group races in a row last campaign, all on wet tracks and gets that here, while 3rd up. His first two starts this time in have been pearlers. Ran 2nd in the Gr 2 Theo Marks over 1400m then last start, run down near the post when 2nd to Vilana in the lead-up race the Silver Eagle. Bad draw hurts as he no doubt pings out and tries to come across. He has the pace to do that but there is speed inside him and it may tell late. Should be considered.

7. HILAL  (17) x5237x9400

T: Team Hawkes /J: Jay Ford (57.5kg)

Is or at least has been outstanding this level this trip but this campaign, that form has been missing. Not keen.

8. MILITARY EXPERT (19) 1527×11237

T:  Annabel Neasham /  J: Tommy Berry (57.5kg)

After a terrific on pace 3rd in the Gr 1 Toorak, he ran well below his best when a fading 7th in the Gr 2 Crystal Mile last start at The Valley. This is harder and the wide gate makes it very difficult for him to slot in.

9. LIGHTSABER  (15) x4020x9806

T: Peter Moody / J: –  (57.5kg)

Not racing well enough to trouble these. Form is too poor.

10. PINSTRIPED (22) 1x1150x236

T: Enver Jusufovic/ J: Sam Clipperton (57.5kg)

If the track is playing for the swoopers then this bloke is worth looking at. He can muster late and is now very fit. Flashed home for 3rd in the 1500m Gr 3 Sandown Stakes before finishing hard from near last in the Gr 1 Toorak when 6th. Watch him closely.

11. Brigantine  (7)

T: Mick Kent & Michael  /J: Damian Lane (53kg)

SCRATCHED

12. LIGHT INFANTRY (8) 11x9x22

T: Ciaran Maher & Dave Eustace /  J: Jamie Spencer (56.5kg)

The first of the internationals and this bloke’s record is very impressive. Carries the same silks as the late great Sir Dragonet. Is only lightly raced but from his 5 starts he has 2 wins and 2 placings – both of those placings at Gr 1 level in France. That form seems to always hold up here. Drawn perfectly and should be in your numbers as he has been sensationally backed during the week.

13. WELWAL  (9) 121x2160x

T: Chris Waller / J: Frankie Dettori (56.5kg)

This bloke is also from France. He was a strong Gr 3 winner earlier this year over a mile then beaten 3 lengths in fast run Gr 1 mile in Paris. Has had two solid trials since arriving and does seem to have the requisite amount of talent to be in this finish. Is now trained here too.

14. HINGED  (20) x71324x533

T: Chris Waller / J: Kerrin McEvoy (55.5kg)

What a smart mare. Already won $1.8m in stakes money and tries sooo hard every run. Latest effort was beaten a nose in the Gr 1 Epsom over a mile. Likes it wet too. Probably has to go hard early to find a forward spot, me thinks back in 4th hopefully with cover. If that happens she is a huge player.

15. FANGIRL (21) x15410x256

T: Chris Waller / J: Hugh Bowman (55.5kg)

Very smart on her day and is trained here. Seems back to her best too. Last start was a fabulous run when getting home hard late and 6th in the Gr 1 Epsom over a mile. Gets regular rider Hughie back on top and she runs very, very well for him. Drops out from this gate but if Hugh gets her to the outside in time, she can come with a mighty burst of speed late.

16. CHAIN OF LIGHTNING (2) 11×11131

T: Peter Moody / J: Jamie Kah (55.5kg)

No one as yet knows quite how good this mare is. She has raced 7 times for 6 wins and a third. The beaten race was on a heavy track over 1200m in the Gr 3 How Now where she just didn’t stretch out in the final 250m. Last start though, on a soft surface she finished like a gazelle to easily win the Gr 2 Tristarc Stakes over 1400m at Caulfield. It doesn’t seem like the trip will worry her and she has drawn to get a magical run in about 5th along the fence. Big danger.

17. GYPSY GODDESS  (6) 111x13221x

T: David Vandyke / J: Willy Pike (55.5kg)

If the money comes for her, get on. She is a dab hand while fresh, in fact never been beaten when resuming and she resumes in this. Has won at Gr 1 level up to 2200m and has drawn to receive a dream run. Probably parks about 8th, one off the fence and if she can sprint when they straighten she looms large. Has had 2 trials, latest when 3rd and looking strong. Respect her.

18. LADY OF HONOUR  (13) x111x71233

T: Team Hayes / J: Jake Noonan (55.5kg)

Nice mare, honest mare with real heart. But, she is an on pacer who actually likes to lead and will be in a battle from gate rise here to do so as about 4 others are like that. Saying that, she has a good enough gate to be in a nice spot. Test will be final 150m.

19. LAVISH GIRL  (11) 4831417×27

T: Ciaran Maher & Dave Eustace / J: Keagan Latham (51.5kg)

Is third up here and is fast. but that may be her undoing. There is an enormous amount of genuine speed here and she did weaken in the Silver eagle after turning in front when 7th to Vilana. And for those reasons I think she is vulnerable.

20. HOPE IN YOUR HEART (10) 36270×8111

T: Kerry Parker / J: Jason Collett (55.5kg)

Should run a rather cheeky race. Knocked over some handy ones in winning her past two st6arts, latest over a mile in the Gr 3 Angst when finishing hard to score. Gets back but that will be advantageous here. Sure to run a bold race at big odds.

21. CARDINAL GEM (5) 5×32412311

T: Grahame Begg / J: Jordan Childs (55.5kg)

In form galloper who loves it wet. Has won past 2 starts coming from well back with powerful finishing bursts, both on very wet tracks, latest when winning the 1400m Weekend Hussler at Listed level. This is harder but has a few things about him that will help.

22. JIMMY THE BEAR (18) 2×881121133

T: Pat payne / J: – (57.5kg)

really tough, very honest type who gets back and runs home hard every start. Placed at past two in Listed grade. This is a bit harder but could sneak a place at massive odds.

23. FLYING CRAZY (12) 9161184×00

T: Gerald Ryan & Sterling Alexiou/ J: – (57.5kg)

Racing poorly this campaign and these will belt him.

24. KISS SUM  (1) 1x972221x5

T: Tracey Bartley / J: – (57.5kg)

Talented but not likely to gain a run and probably finds them, too hard late anyway.
