Placing a bet on a favourite – some punters can’t get enough of them, while others steer clear of them. Racing writer Justin Devine looks at some of the more fancied runners for this weekend’s horse racing and decides if he loves them 😍 or if he should leave ❎ them!
The big racing continues at Eagle Farm this weekend with emerging star ZAAKI looking the goods in the Group 2 Q22. The Price trained AYRTON will be better for his second-up placing and can bounce back with a win in the Gunsynd Classic. GRAVINA ran out of his skin to win at Randwick last start and will only need to be close to that level to get the prize with promising apprentice Reece Jones to steer 😍.
CORNER POCKET steps up to Saturday company at Sandown and will find leading all the way in heavy conditions too big a task. AMBIDAZZLE has proven a money muncher of late and from gate 1 this week, she will need her fair share of luck in the run at Morphetville. Perth punters will need to take unders on DEVOTED STAR due to his jockey and trainer combination and I’m not convinced she can get the job done at Belmont ❎.
Good Luck Punters!
Eagle Farm R3 – 2. Ayrton @ $1.80 😍
AYRTON tasted defeat for the first time when he was unable to run down APACHE CHASE in the Group 3 Fred Best last start (below) when a short-priced favourite. Opinion is divided on the Mick Price trained 3yo. Has his bubble burst? When you consider that he was beaten by a small margin, was second up and racing in the clockwise direction for the first time his run wasn’t poor. If he had found half a length in the straight, he might be running as favourite in the Group 1 Stradbroke. Instead, he takes on 3yos at set weights, with JMAC to ride and has drawn gate 1. Expect him to bounce back.
Ayrton couldn’t catch Apache Chase in Queensland. 😮
What did you make of his run?

Randwick R4 – 7. Gravina @ $2.10 😍
The Godolphin trained GRAVINA put in the run of the day when decimating his rivals at Randwick last start (below) and only steps up marginally in class this week. He gets in better at the weights this week and with the 3kg claim for Reece Jones retains the ride with the 3kg ride. He only needs to reproduce something close to his last run to get the prize. Yes, please.

Eagle Farm R5 – 1. Zaaki @ $1.50 😍
ZAAKI set tongues wagging when he dominated his rivals to win the Group 1 Doomben Cup last start (below). Not since the might mare WINX have we seen a more dominant Group 1 winner and the Annabel Neasham trained import looks more than capable of handling the step up in distance to 2200m. He will set up on the speed and run his rivals ragged. The best bet of the day.
"This is one of the easiest Doomben Cup wins in the history of the race."

Morphettville R4- 4. Ambidazzle @ $2.90 ❎
AMBIDAZZLE has been a costly horse for punters of late, going down as a well-backed favourite at her last two starts. With a 2kg claimer onboard and gate 1, the 4yo risks getting locked away along the rails in the run and making ground from the rear on the Parks circuit can be problematic. It’s 9 runs since AMBIDAZZLE last won and she looks under the odds. No thanks
Sandown R8 – 8. Corner Pocket @ $3.80 ❎
CORNER POCKET is chasing his sixth win in a row and continues to step up in his races. This is his biggest challenge to date and he meets heavy ground for the first time in his career. Can he jump to the front from the wide gate and lead all the way? Will he be a sitting shot late? I’m inclined to think that there are more questions than answers this week! I will be betting around him.
Belmont R5 – 5. Devoted Star @ $2.30 ❎
DEVOTED STAR made up good ground to finish second first up and is expected to be better over the 1200m this week. The Bob Peters/Team Williams/Willy Pike team are one of the most successful in the country, but I do wonder if DEVOTED STAR deserves to be so short in betting. She has one placing from three second-up runs and hasn’t had a win in her last five runs. Punters need to “take her on trust”. No thanks.
