WILL EVANS’ daily preview serves up Wimbledon tips for Nick Kyrgios’ tame first-up assignment against wildcard Paul Jubb.
21:30 (AEST), Tue 28th Jun @ All England Club, Wimbledon
History: First meeting
Final Thoughts: Irrepressible Aussie Nick Kyrgios has been dealt a comfortable draw for the first round in the shape of world No.219 Paul Jubb.
British 22-year-old Jubb was handed a wildcard entry for his second grand slam appearance, having previously lost in the first round at Wimbledon in 2019. He managed to beat James Duckworth and Steve Johnson to qualify for the Queen’s Club Championships (where he lost first up to Botic van de Zandschulp) but he failed to qualify for the Eastbourne International.
Kyrgios arrives in London with a head of steam. A strong run of hard-court form culminated in a Houston Open semi-final appearance in April, before skipping the clay swing.
The 27-year-old returned on grass with semi-final runs at the Stuttgart and Halle Opens, leaving the likes of Nikoloz Basilashvili, Stefanos Tsitsipas and Pablo Carreno Busta in his wake. He withdrew from his second-round match at the Mallorca Open last week with an abdominal complaint but the injury isn’t regarded as serious.
While Kyrgios made the last of his two grand slam quarter-final appearances back in 2015, he is 22-7 in first-round slam matches (6-1 at Wimbledon).
A $1.08 favourite, Kyrgios has a tendency to surprise in the best and worst ways – but health permitting, his booming serve and range of shots should make very short work of Jubb.
