History: Played 1: Djokovic 1 V Kokkinakis 0
Last meeting: French Open, 2015 (R32): Djokovic d Kokkinakis 6-4 6-4 6-4
Final Thoughts: Adelaide’s Thanasi Kokkinakis emerged from the opening round with a straight-sets win, but he confronts Wimbledon’s Everest in the second round.
Kokkinakis, ranked 79th, overwhelmed Kamil Majchrzak 7-6 6-2 7-5 to record his first-ever Wimbledon victory – and his first win in any competition since the Geneva Open in mid-May. The 26-year-old sent down 17 aces and struck 53 winners, while he won 80 percent of his first-serve points.
Novak Djokovic had a less-than-smooth first-round experience, eventually putting away Kwon Soon-woo 6-3 3-6 6-3 6-4. But it was nevertheless a decent way to blow out the cobwebs in his first competitive outing since the French Open.
Djokovic is hunting his fourth straight Wimbledon title and his seventh overall. He made at least the quarters at Wimbledon every year since 2009, while he has been lost in the second round of just one grand slam since 2008.
Kokkinakis has had one previous crack against Djokovic. The teenaged upstart held his own in a 6-4 6-4 6-4 loss in the third round of the 2015 French Open.
Djokovic is just $1.40 to win in straight sets and should get the job done without too much fuss. But Kokkinakis won’t roll over and has enough tricks in his kitbag to take his share of games off one of the greatest grass-court players of all time.
