WILL EVANS’ daily preview serves up Wimbledon tips as Aussie Ajla Tomljanovic and Kazakhstan’s Elina Rybakina both chase a maiden grand slam semi berth.
22:00 (AEST), Wed 6th Jul @ All England Club, Wimbledon
History: Played 1: Rybakina 1 V Tomljanovic
History: Madrid Masters, 2021 (R64): Rybakina d Tomljanovic 6-4 6-0
Final Thoughts: Ajla Tomljanovic and Elina Rybakina could hardly have been more impressive in reaching the respective second grand slam quarter-finals.
Tomljanovic’s breakout 2021 Wimbledon run was halted eventually by Ash Barty in the quarters, but the 29-year-old Aussie is back in the last eight again after a string of outstanding results. She blew 18th seed Jil Teichmann and qualifier Catherine Harrison off the court in straight sets.
Showing tremendous resilience, the big-hitting world No.44 came from a set down to beat 13th seed Barbora Krejcikova and Alize Cornet, who was coming of a stunning upset of world No.1 Iga Swiatek.
Rybakina, the 17th seed, made the quarters at last year’s French Open. After a modest grass-court build-up, she is yet to drop a set at Wimbledon.
The 23-year-old has overwhelmed some well-credentialled opponents: Coco Vandeweghe, Bianca Andreescu, Quinwen Zheng and Petra Martic. Her strong serve and forehand have clicked over the past week.
Rybakina won the pair’s only previous encounter – a straight-sets result on clay at last year’s Madrid Masters.
In an even match-up, the higher-ranked Rybakina heads in as a warm favourite. But this is a huge opportunity for Tomljanovic that may not come around again – expect her to leave everything out on the All England Club courts in an absorbing duel.
