UFC 299 Tips

Sean O’Malley (c) vs Marlon Vera

Career Records:

O’Malley – 17-1 (1) (12 wins by KO/TKO)

Vera – 23-1-8 (8 wins by KO/TKO)

Last Bouts:

O’Malley def by Sterling – TKO – UFC 292, August 2023

Vera def Munhoz – Decision (unanimous) – UFC 292, August 2023

In the UFC’s last pay-per-view main event before the UFC 300 milestone, rivals Sean O’Malley and Marlon Vera will go head-to-head in the Octagon once again, four years after their first fight against each other four years ago in UFC 252.

Although there was controversy surrounding whether Vera was a legitimate number-one contender for the title, he previously defeated O’Malley back in 2020 by TKO (elbows and punches) at UFC 252; he will be looking to repeat the feat on Sunday.

However, since the last bout between the two fighters, Sean O’Malley has improved rapidly and is purely the better fighter of the two. The champion has shown tremendous growth in the ring and has victories over Petr Yan and Aljamain Sterling, where he showed his composure and skill.

Dustin Poirier vs Benoit Saint Denis

Career Records:

Poirer – 29-8 (1) (14 wins by KO/TKO)

Saint Denis – 13-1 (1) (13 wins by KO/TKO)

Last Bouts:

Poirer def by Gaethje – KO – UFC 291, July 2023

Saint Denis def Frevola – KO – UFC 295, November 2023

Expected to be an entertaining fight, Dustin Poirier and Benoit Saint Denis are at different ends of their professional fighting careers. Poirier is a surefire future UFC Hall of Famer and ex-UFC Lightweight Champion, while Saint Denis is slowly rising up through the ranks and is on the verge of breaking out as a future star.

Benoit Saint Denis enters the fight after five consecutive victories following a disputed decision loss in 2021 and has won all of them by KO/TKO stoppage. Although he may lack experience, he is definitely the favourite heading into the fight and has an amazing striking game with precision, power and skill.

Opposing him is Dustin Poirer, who is coming off an unfortunate loss to Justin Gaethje at UFC 291. Having lost two of his last three fights – including the Round 1 loss to Gaethje – this may be his last fight if he fails to get the win. The only way Poirer can win is through his experience and try and outwit his opponent.

Kevin Holland vs Michael Page

Career Records:

Holland – 25-10 (1) (14 wins by KO/TKO)

Page – 21-2 (13 wins by KO/TKO)

Last Bouts:

Holland def by Della Maddalena – Decision (split) – UFC Fight Night: Grasso vs Shevchenko 2, September 2023

Page def Yamauchi – TKO – Bellator 292, March 2023

Following in the footsteps of Michael Chandler, Michael Page will make his UFC debut on the weekend after spending years in the Bellator promotion – a rival of the Dana White-led promotion. Page’s debut will be against veteran Kevin Holland.

No stranger to the UFC Octagon, Holland’s career has seen him register wins against Alex Oliveira, Michael Chiesa, and Ronaldo Souza. However, he has struggled in the big match-ups, having lost to Della Maddalena, Chimaev, and Santos. Dynamic on the ground, Holland will be looking to keep the fight on the canvas with his grappling ability.

Known for a plethora of memorable moments in Bellator, Page will be looking to create some more in the UFC and begin his career with a good showing against Holland. The 36-year-old is known as a striker with his punches and elbows and will hope to surprise his opponent with unpredictability.

Gilbert Burns vs Jack Della Maddalena

Career Records:

Burns – 22-6 (6 wins by KO/TKO)

Della Maddalena – 16-2 (11 wins by KO/TKO)

Last Bouts:

Burns def by Muhammad – Decision (unanimous) – UFC 288, May 2023

Della Maddalena def Holland – Decision (unanimous) – UFC Fight Night: Grasso vs Shevchenko 2, September 2023

Likely to be a match for the ages, Brazilian fighter Gilbert Burns will go head-to-head with Australian Jack Della Maddalena as he looks to make a successful comeback after being defeated by Belal Muhammad at UFC 288.

Burns will be looking to end the fight quickly but has shown that he can last the three rounds, with four of his past five fights going the distance. With a 1.95 takedown average and 0.53 submission average, Burns will be looking to use his grappling skills and keep his opponent on the mat which will see him emerge as the winner via a decision or submission.

Taking him on is Aussie Jack Della Maddalena, who is in terrific form, having won his last two fights, the latter being a win over Kevin Holland in September last year.  Since his UFC debut he has held a perfect 6-0 record and won’t be looking to earn his first loss on Sunday.

Petr Yan vs Song Yadong

Career Records:

Yan 16-5 (7 wins by KO/TKO)

Song 21-1-7 (1) (9 wins by KO/TKO)

Last Bouts:

Yan def by Dvalishvili – Decision (unanimous) – UFC Fight Night: Yan vs Dvalishvili, March 2023

Song def Gutierrez – Decision (unanimous) – UFC Fight Night: Song vs Gutierrez, December 2023

After becoming an undisputed champion, Petr Yan has struggled recently. He has three consecutive losses in the UFC Octagon under his belt, the most recent occurring against Merab Dvalishvili in March 2023 and another being a disqualification against Aljamain Sterling, where he looked like he was in the front seat.

However, he will be eager to change his fortunes on the weekend, and is an amazing kickboxer who is incredible in takedown defence and can work several combinations into his arsenal. Known as a slow starter, this will be his first three-round bout in quite a while and he could struggle to get going right away.

His opponent, Song Yadong, who is known for his skill with gloves, will look to take advantage of this. A fantastic striker with his hands, Song will be looking to use his quickness to produce a easy victory in the opening round and will go after Yan from the get-go.
