UFC 294 Tips- Makhachev vs Volkanovski 2

Islam Makhachev (c) vs Alexander Volkanovski

Career Records:

Makhachev – 24-1 (4 wins by KO/TKO)

Volkanovski – 26-2 (13 wins by KO/TKO)

Last Bouts:

Makhachev def Volkanovski – Decision (unanimous) – UFC 284, February, 2023

Volkanovski def Rodriguez – TKO – UFC 290, July, 2023

Originally set to face Charles Oliveira, champion Islam Makhachev will now talk on Australian Alexander Volkanovski in what is a direct rematch from their fight at UFC 284. Expect their fight to mirror the one they had earlier this year. A fight that has been regarded as the Best Fight of the Year.

Volkanovski is likely to adjust to the champion’s style and is coming off a win at UFC 290. However, Makhachev is fully aware of his opponent’s ability in the Octagon and will know what to expect.

In their previous match-up, Makhachev excelled in the takedown game, whilst Volkanovski had the advantage when it came to strikes.

BEST BET: Match Result- Volkanovski @ $3.12

Kamaru Usman vs Khazmat Chimaev

Career Records:

Usman – 20-3 (9 wins by KO/TKO)

Chimaev – 12-0 (6 wins by KO/TKO)

Last Bouts:

Usman def by Edwards – Decision (majority) – UFC 286, March, 2023

Chimaev def Holland – Submission – UFC 279, September, 2022

A late addition to the UFC 294 card, substituting for Paulo Costa, who was a late withdrawal, Kamaru Usman will take on Khazmat Chimaev. Usman will also head into the fight with rumours swirling that ‘something popped’ in his knee during open workouts for the fight – the rumours have been vehemently denied by Usman and his camp.

While Chimaev is the heavy favourite and will likely walk away with the win, expect Usman to last at least 2.5 rounds or more. Considering Chimaev hasn’t fought in over a year, he could begin a bit scratchy and will need time to get into the fight. Also, he lasted the entire three rounds against Gilbert Burns, and Usman is the better opponent out of the two.

Chimaev has seen 50 per cent of his victories end in KO/TKO, so Usman will be aiming to stay away from his strikes. However, both are crafty fighters and have plenty of experience under their belt.

BEST BET: Total Score (2.5)- Over 2.5 @ $2.25

Magomed Ankalaev vs Johnny Walker

Career Records:

Ankalaev – 18-1-1 (10 wins by KO/TKO)

Walker – 21-7 (16 wins by KO/TKO)

Last Bouts:

Ankalaev drew with Blachowicz at UFC 282 in December 2022

Walker def Smith – Decision (unanimous) – UFC on ABC: Rozenstruik vs Almeida, May, 2023

In a fight that could go either way, Magomed Ankalaev and Johnny Walker could both end up as the emerging victors in the fight. Ankalaev’s background is in Sambo, and can easily throw Walker to the surface and take control of the match on the ground. However, his striking game is underrated and could very well aim to stay on his feet.

On the other hand, Walker will look to do the fundamentals right and is immaculate with kicks and punches. This is shown by his MMA record, illustrating that 16 of his 21 wins have come by KO/TKO. However, he has continually struggled in his defence game, and this could be the weak point for him at UFC 294.

The likely outcome depends on the time-length of the bout between the two athletes. Walker’s only probable way to win is if he gets a quick knockout, while Ankalaev will have the upper advantage the longer the bout goes.

Ikram Alisekerov vs Warlley Alves

Career Records:

Alisekerov – 14-1 (5 wins by KO/TKO)

Alves – 14-6 (4 wins by KO/TKO)

Last Bouts:

Alisekerov def Haws – KO – UFC 288, May, 2022

Alves def by Dalby – Decision (split) – UFC 283, January, 2023

Both Ikram Alisekerov and Warleyy Alves have somewhat similar records when it comes to the amount of experience they have in the Octagon, but the former has been in better form as of late, only registering a single loss in his 15 matches.

Alisekerov will likely control the striking game and have the advantage in grappling on the floor. Although Alves is a fighter that can produce something out of nothing and his unpredictability will be key during the fight. For example, Alves has shown in the past that he throws a wild offence to go with pressing forward to take it to his opponent.

However, with Alves moving up a weight class than what he is normally used to, it could cause a significant problem for him. This will also give Alisekerov the easy size advantage in the fight between the two.

BEST BET: Method of Victory- Alisekerov by Submission @ $2.80

Said Nurmagomedov vs Muin Gafurov

Career Records:

Nurmagomedov – 17-3 (4 wins by KO/TKO)

Gafurov – 18-5 (1o wins by KO/TKO)

Last Bouts:

Nurmagomedov def by Martinez – Decision (unanimous) – UFC Fight Night: Yan vs Dvalishvili

Gafurov def by Castaneda – Decision (split) – UFC Fight Night: Kara-France vs Albazi, June, 2023

The kick-off match of the card will see Nurmagomedov take on Gavurov. Despite losing his previous fight, Nurmagomedov is on the fringe of the Top 15 in his weight class and will be looking to re-enter it on Sunday with a win.

Heading into the bout as the favourite, Nurmagomedov will likely take control of the fight with his grappling ability and submission techniques – continually winning with submission against his opponents as of late. He is also a magnificent kickboxer, and the longer the fight goes, the more chance he has of his hand being raised.

However, a win by Muin Gafurov could be on the cards. Gafurov will be looking for a quick win if he stands any chance of emerging victorious. Despite being 0-1 in his UFC career, he will be looking to strike and keep the fight off the canvas.

BEST BET: Nurmagomedov by Points @ $3.20
