Check out UFC 283 tips and previews for all five main card fights in Rio de Janeiro, including the main event with Glover Teixeira taking on Jamahl Hill for the vacant UFC Light Heavyweight Championship.

UFC 283 Tips – Glover Teixeira V Jamahl Hill

15:20 (AEDT), Sun 22nd Jan @ Jeunesse Arena, Rio de Janeiro

Career records:

  • Teixeira – 33-8 (18 wins by KO/TKO)
  • Hill – 11-1-1 wins (7 wins by KO/TKO)

Last bouts:

  • Teixeira lost to Jiri Prochazka – Rd 5 Submission – UFC 275, June 2022
  • Hill def Thiago Santos – Rd 4 TKO – UFC on ESPN, August 2022

Analysis: The UFC returns to Brazil for the first time since 2020 and, fittingly, it’s a homegrown hero on the bill to headline UFC 283.

The 43-year-old Glover Teixeira takes on rising American star Jamahl Hill for the vacant UFC Light Heavyweight Championship. Teixeira won the title in October 2021 with a Round 2 submission win over Jan Blachowicz in Abu Dhabi but surrendered it in June last year, tapping out in Jiri Prochazka’s rear-naked choke late in the fifth round of a classic. A rematch between Prochazka and Teixeira was booked for UFC 282 last month but the champ pulled out with injury and vacated the title. Teixeira refused a replacement fight against Magomed Ankalaev but the draw between Blachowicz and Ankalaev at UFC 282 means the title is still up for grabs.

‘Sweet Dreams’ Hill receives a shot at the belt relatively early in his MMA career and UFC tenure. Joining the promotion in 2020, Hill suffered the only loss of his career in June 2021 – a first-round TKO at the hands of Paul Craig. Since then, the 31-year-old has knocked out Jimmy Crute (Rd 1), Johnny Walker (Rd 1) and Thiago Santos (Rd 4).

Both are jiu-jitsu experts, but Teixeira – despite his advancing years – remains one of the division’s best grapplers and should be more comfortable on the ground than Hill, who will rely more heavily on his striking ability (he has seven knockouts in 11 wins).

Perhaps surprisingly, Teixeira is a narrow outsider here. Hill has the potential to be a big dog in the division for years to come, but I like his more seasoned opponent to get the job done and bring the house down in Rio.

Tip: Teixeira Win @ $2.10

UFC 283 Tips – Deiveson Figueiredo V Brandon Moreno

15:00 (AEDT), Sun 22nd Jan @ Jeunesse Arena, Rio de Janeiro

Career records:

  • Figueiredo – 21-2-1 (9 wins by KO/TKO)
  • Moreno – 19-5 (6 wins by KO/TKO)

Last bouts:

  • Figueiredo def Brandon Moreno – Unanimous decision – UFC 270, January 2022
  • Moreno def Kai Kara France – Rd 3 TKO – UFC 277, July 2022

Analysis: There’s another title fight on the UFC 283 current two-time champ Deiveson Figueiredo squares off against former champion and current interim title holder Brandon Moreno for the UFC Flyweight Championship. But history will also be made courtesy of the UFC’s first-ever quadrilogy fight.

The ledger is square after the first three bouts. The pair met for the first time in December 2020, fighting out a majority draw that saw Figueiredo retain the Flyweight Championship. Moreno snared the belt in June 2021 with a Round 3 submission victory but handed it back after losing a unanimous decision to Figueiredo – who knocked Moreno down several times – in January last year.

Figueiredo has been dormant since due to a contract dispute, but Moreno faced Kiwi Kai Kara-France in July and won the interim title with a third-round TKO success.

Brazilian Figueiredo will be looking to use the home crowd advantage against Tijuana native Moreno. That might just prove the difference between two lionhearted, dangerous fighters that have proven to be very evenly matched in three previous battles.

Tip: Figueiredo Win @ $2.00

UFC 283 Tips – Gilbert Burns V Neil Magny

14:40 (AEDT), Sun 22nd Jan @ Jeunesse Arena, Rio de Janeiro

Career records:

  • Burns – 25-5 (6 wins by KO/TKO)
  • Magny – 27-9 (7 wins by KO/TKO)

Last bouts:

  • Burns lost to Khamzat Chimaev – Unanimous decision – UFC 273, April 2022
  • Magny def Daniel Rodriguez – Rd 3 Submission – UFC Fight Night, November 2022

Analysis: The last bout before the two title fights at UFC 283, fifth-ranked welterweight contender Gilbert Burns locks horns with 12th-ranked Neil Magny.

Burns, the $1.21 favourite here, desperately needs a win if he is to work his way towards another title fight. He lost his challenge against long-time division overlord Kamaru Usman in February 2021 by Round 3 TKO, before bouncing back with a unanimous decision over Stephen Thompson five months later. Burns lost his last bout last April – a unanimous decision awarded to undefeated Khamzat Chimaev – but earned plaudits for a gutsy display against a top-shelf opponent.

Magny is on just a two-month turnaround from his last assignment, a third-round submission win over Daniel Rodriguez that provided a timely boost in the wake of a submission loss to Shavkat Rakhmonov in June. He has the honour of the most wins in welterweight history, though he is yet to claim the victory over a high-profile rival that would push him into the title challenge conversation.

Magny moves well, is a technically proficient fighter and is very durable – this is his fourth fight in just under 10 months. But it’s the more physical Burns’ to lose.

Tip: Method of Victory – Burns by Points @ $3.00

UFC 283 Tips – Jessica Andrade V Lauren Murphy

14:20 (AEDT), Sun 22nd Jan @ Jeunesse Arena, Rio de Janeiro

Career records:

  • Andrade – 23-9 (9 wins by KO/TKO)
  • Murphy – 16-5 (8 wins by KO/TKO)

Last bouts:

  • Andrade def Amanda Lemos – Rd 1 Submission – UFC Fight Night, April 2022
  • Murphy def Meisha Tate – Unanimous decision – UFC on ABC, July 2022

Analysis: Former UFC Women’s Strawweight champion Jessica Andrade is searching for her fourth win in five bouts since moving to the flyweight division in 2020. After losing her UFC Women’s Flyweight Championship challenge against Valentina Shevchenko (Rd 2 TKO) in 2021, she is the sixth-ranked contender in the division following first-round victories over Cynthia Calvillo (TKO) and Amanda Lemos (submission).

Despite heading into this encounter as the $4.60 underdog, Lauren Murphy is the fourth-ranked flyweight contender. The 39-year-old Alaskan has won six of her last seven fights (four by decision). She also went down to division champ Shevchenko in a September 2021 title fight (Rd 4 TKO) but is coming off a win, claiming a unanimous decision over former UFC Bantamweight Champion Miesha Tate, who was on flyweight debut, last July.

There’s plenty on the line – the winner will re-enter the conversation for another title challenger, while the loser may fade right out of it.

Murphy boasts a handy size and reach advantage, while her striking looked signficantly improved against Tate. But Andrade’s tenacity and endurance has brought many an opponent undone and she looks likely to find a way to get the W.

Tip: Will Fight Go The Distance – Yes @ $1.88

UFC 283 Tips – Paul Craig V Johnny Walker

14:00 (AEDT), Sun 22nd Jan @ Jeunesse Arena, Rio de Janeiro

Career records:

  • Craig – 16-5 (3 wins by KO/TKO)
  • Walker – 19-7 (15 wins by KO/TKO)

Last bouts:

  • Craig lost to Volkan Oezdemir – Unanimous decision – UFC Fight Night, July 2022
  • Walker def Ion Cutelaba – Rd 1 Submission – UFC 279, September 2022

Analysis: Paul Craig and Johnny Walker are both among the UFC Light Heavyweight division’s top 15, but this is unmistakably a make or break fight for both competitors after some patchy results in recent times.

Scotsman Craig lost four of his first seven fights under the UFC banner rose up the ranks via a six-bout unbeaten streak from 2019-22 – including a first-round TKO of Jamahl Hill in June 2021. But his momentum was halted in July last year by a loss by unanimous decision to Volkan Oezdemir.

Walker’s star began to fade with four losses in five fight, including back-to-back defeats to Thiago Santos (decision) in October 2021 and Hill (Rd 1 KO) in February 2022. However, the 30-year-old regained some confidence with a first-round submission (rear-naked choke) win over Ion Cutelaba in September.

Walker, the $1.52 favourite here, boasts 15 knockouts among his 19 wins and has the advantage of fighting in his home city. It seems unlikely to go the distance and Walker should have enough in his arsenal to overcome expert grappler Craig.

Tip: Method of Victory – Walker by KO/TKO @ $1.75
