The day 11 preview serves up Wimbledon tips for a monster semi-final showdown between archrivals Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer.
20:00 (AEST), Fri 12th Jul @ All England Club, Wimbledon
History: Played 40: Nadal 24 V Federer 16
Final Thoughts: French Open, 2019 (SF): Nadal d Federer 6-3 6-4 6-2
They meet again. Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer, two absolute titans of men’s tennis, square off in another instalment of one of sport’s greatest-ever rivalries.
Nadal is hunting his third Wimbledon title, but his first since 2010. Federer has eight Wimbledon crowns to his name, last winning in 2017.
Both have carved a dominant path through this tournament. Nadal has only dropped one set – against Nick Kyrgios in the second round. Since then he has disposed of Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, Joao Sousa and Sam Querrey in straight sets by margins of 10-plus games.
Federer followed up three consecutive straight-sets wins – including a blistering 6-1 6-2 6-2 fourth-round defeat of Matteo Berrettini – by coming from a set down to beat eighth seed Kei Nishikori in four.
Nadal takes a significant psychological edge into this blockbuster after demolishing Federer 6-3 6-4 6-2 in the French Open last month.
Nadal’s semi win at Roland Garross ended a five-match losing streak against Federer. It also advanced Nadal’s grand slam semi-final record to an outstanding 26-5. But he was a beaten semi-finalist at Wimbledon last year and is chasing his first appearance in a final at the All England Club since 2011.
Federer has won only eight of his last 19 grand slam semis. But he has lost at this stage just once in 12 career Wimbledon semis.
Remarkably, they have not met at Wimbledon since the 2008 final, when Nadal claimed his first title there. Federer won the 2006-07 finals against Nadal.
Nadal boasts an imposing 10-3 grand slam record against Federer. It’s a ledger that speaks volumes – and explains why the Spanish icon is a narrow favourite. Expect this to go at least four sets, but lean towards Nadal.
