The day nine preview serves up Wimbledon tips for top seed Novak Djokovic’s quarter-final showdown with David Goffin.
20:00 (AEST), Wed 10th Jul @ All England Club, Wimbledon
History: Played 6: Djokovic 5 V Goffin 1
Final Thoughts: Monte Carlo Masters, 2017 (QF): Goffin d Djokovic 6-2 3-6 7-5
Novak Djokovic’s Wimbledon title defence has been a smooth ride to date. But he confronts by far his biggest test of the tournament to date in the shape of David Goffin.
Djokovic has brushed aside Philipp Kohlschreiber, Denis Kudla, Hubert Hurkacz and Ugo Humbert to reach the quarters for the 10th time in 11 years. The only set he dropped with a tie-break againset Hurkacz in the third round.
All four of the world No.1’s matches featured winning margins of eight games or more.
Goffin, the 21st seed, has endured a far tougher path to the last eight. But he has played a far higher standard of opponent.
The 28-year-old kicked off with straight-sets wins over Bradley Klahn and Jeremy Chardy. He then came from a set down to overwhelm 11th seed Daniil Medvedev in five.
Goffin notched a career-first Wimbledon quarter-final appearance with a four-set victory over Fernando Verdasco. His previous best at the All England Club was fourth-round exits in 2015-16.
Goffin is 0-2 in grand slam quarter-finals, losing at the 2016 French Open and the 2017 Australian Open. Djokovic has a 35-9 career grand slam record in quarter-finals, and has been to the semis or further in the past four – three of which he has won. The 32-year-old is also hunting the fifth Wimbledon title of his monumental career.
Djokovic boasts a dominant 5-1 career record against Goffin. But the Belgian won their most recent clash, a three-set result in the 2017 Monte Carlo Masters quarter-finals.
Goffin is one of the best offensive baseliners on tour. Although he doesn’t quite have the all-round game that is likely to topple Djokovic, he is good enough to take a set.
