History: Played 1: Berrettini 1 V Auger Aliassime 0
Last meeting: Stuttgart Open, 2019 (F): Berrettini d Auger Aliassime 6-4 7-6
Final Thoughts: Seventh seed Matteo Berrettini and 16th seed Felix Auger Aliassime square off for a likely Wimbledon semi-final date with Roger Federer.
Berrettini has enjoyed a relatively smooth path to the last eight. The 25-year-old Italian dropped a set against Guido Pella in the first round, but has since cruised to straight-sets victories over Botic van de Zandschulp, Aljaz Bedene and Ilya Ivashka.
Berrettini is into his third Grand Slam quarter-final, having reached the 2019 US Open semis and the quarters at the recent French Open. He hinted at a deep Wimbledon run by winning the Queen’s Club Championships last month as the top seed.
Auger Aliassime also produced some excellent lead-in form, making the Stuttgart Open final and the Halle Open semis.
The 20-year-old put away Thiago Monteiro in the first round at Wimbledon in straight sets, outlasted Mikael Ymer in four and moved into the Round of 16 when Nick Kyrgios retired from their clash with the scores tied one set all.
Auger Aliassime qualified for his maiden Slam quarter-final with an epic victory over fourth seed Alexander Zverev. After watching a two-set lead evaporate, the tyro won the fifth 6-4 in a coming-of-age triumph.
Their only previous meeting was also a high-stakes match on grass. Berrettini won the 2019 Stuttgart Open final over an 18-year-old Auger Aliassime 6-4 7-6.
Both players arrive in the quarters in tremendous form. But Auger Aliassime should be considerably more battle-hardened. Berrettini is yet to face a seeded player and has had little pressure applied to him.
While Berrettini’s experience advantage may eventually prove the difference, I’m expecting Auger Aliassime to grab at least one set – and an upset isn’t out of the question for the $3.81 underdog.
