The day 10 preview serves up Wimbledon tips as first time grand slam semi-finalist Elina Svitolina takes on proven big-match performer Simona Halep.
20:00 (AEST), Thu 11th Jul @ All England Club, Wimbledon
History: Played 6: Svitolina 4 V Halep 2
Last meeting: Doha Open, 2019 (SF): Halep d Svitolina 6-3 3-6 6-4
Final Thoughts: Elina Svitolina is into her maiden grand slam semi-final, while Simona Halep is vying for her first Wimbledon final.
World No.8 Svitolina had stumbled at the quarter-final stage four times previously at the Australian and French Opens. But she iced her first Wimbledon quarters opportunity, beating Karolina Muchova 7-5 6-4.
The Ukranian 24-year-old has only dropped one set so far – to Maria Sakkari in the third round. It’s been a tremendous turnaround after first-round exits at the lead-in Birmingham Classic and Eastbourne International tournaments.
Halep is into the final four of a slam event for the seventh time. The 2018 French Open champion’s only previous Wimbledon semi appearance in 2014 ended in defeat.
Since dropping a set to Mihaela Buzarnescu in the second round, Halep has been in imperious form. The seventh seed comprehensively outplayed Victoria Azazrenka (6-3 6-1), Coco Gauff (6-3 6-3) and Zhang Shuai (7-6 6-1).
Halep broke a three-match losing streak against Svitolina with victory in the Doha semi-finals earlier this year. The Romanian’s only other win over Svitolina was in the pair’s lone grand slam meeting – the 2017 French Open quarters.
The world No.1 not all that long ago, Halep’s form has been little short of blistering. Svitolina has had a few more hairy moments but keeps finding ways to get the job done.
This shapes as a hard-fought affair, but Halep’s big-match experience should prove the difference.
