WILL EVANS’ daily preview serves up Wimbledon tips for world No.1 Ash Barty’s third-round showdown with Katerina Siniakova.
00:30 (AEST), Sun 4th Jul @ All England Club, Wimbledon
History: First meeting
One of only four top-13 seeds remaining, Ash Barty has a gilt-edged opportunity to become Australia’s first Wimbledon champs since Lleyton Hewitt in 2002 – and the nation’s first women’s winner since Evonne Goolagong-Cawley 40 years ago.
Barty has moved into the third round without too much fuss, despite still searching for anything like top form. She had some second-set stumbles in a 6-1 6-7 6-1 victory over Carla Suarez Navarro first up, sending down 13 aces in the match.
A 6-4 6-3 defeat of Anna Blinkova in the second round put her fighting qualities on display. Barty double-faulted eight times and made 33 unforced errors, yet still won reasonably comfortably.
The 25-year-old has made it to the last 16 of seven of her last eight Grand Slam appearances.
Third-round opponent Katerina Siniakova has been beyond this stage just once in 26 majors, when she reached the French Open fourth round in 2019.
Bad the 25-year-old Czech arrived at Wimbledon in fine form. After winning the French Open doubles with Barbora Krejcikova, she reached the final of the Bad Homburg Open in Germany. Siniakova, the world No.64, beat three of the top eight seeds before losing the decider to Angelique Kerber.
She blasted Wang Yafan away 6-1 6-0 in the first round at Wimbledon and came from a set down to beat Coco Vandeweghe. Sinikova’s well-round game suits grass courts and she is a genuine chance up against Barty.
Barty’s shown a fair bit of rust so far and should be pushed hard, though her big-match experience and variety in her game will ultimately get her through.
