WILL EVANS’ daily preview serves up Wimbledon tips for Aussie superstar Ash Barty’s fourth-round blockbuster with Barbora Krejcikova.
22:00 (AEST), Mon 5th Jul @ All England Club, Wimbledon
History: First meeting
Final Thoughts: World No.1 Ashley Barty’s bid for Wimbledon glory steps up a notch in the fourth round as she faces reigning French Open champ Barbora Krejcikova on ‘Manic Monday’.
Barty is yet to hit top gear in London but has moved into the last 16 without too much fuss. She overcame Carla Suarez Navarro 6-1 6-7 6-1 in the opening round, outlasted Anna Blinkova 6-4 6-3 in the second and suppressed the challenge of Katerina Siniakova in the third.
In one of the most pleasing aspects of her most recent outing, Barty had zero double-faults against Siniakova after committing nine against Blinkova.
Krejcikova, the 14th seed, did not feature in any grass-court warm-up events following her rousing Roland Garros triumph. But she hit the ground running at Wimbledon with straight-sets victories over Clara Tauson and Andrea Petkovic.
The 25-year-old Czech then prevailed in a torrid affair against Anastasija Sevastova in the third round, winning 7-6 3-6 7-5.
Despite her status as one of the WTA Tour’s dominant players, Barty is aiming to reach a Grand Slam quarter-final for just the fifth time. She has never been beyond the fourth round at Wimbledon. Krejcikova, meanwhile, is appearing at Wimbledon for the first time in just her sixth major.
The tennis world is bemoaning the fact two players of this quality are meeting so early in the tournament. But expect Barty’s experience and desire to come to the forefront in this clash. It’s been a huge month for Krejcikova and there were signs she was running out of steam against Sevastova.
