History: Washington Open, 2017 (R16): Medvedev d Dimitrov 6-4 6-2
Final Thoughts: The 2019 US Open will feature a first-time grand slam finalist after the first semi between young gun Daniil Medvedev and resurgent veteran Grigor Dimitrov.
The 28-year-old Dimitrov’s charge to the final four has been the fairytale story of the tournament.
No.3 in the world less than two years ago, the Bulgarian is currently ranked 78th. He came into the US Open after winning just one match in his previous six tournaments.
But Dimitrov has been sensational in New York. Following a straight-sets fourth-round win over in-form Aussie tyro Alex de Minaur, he outlasted Roger Federer in an epic five-setter.
Dimitrov has played in two grand slam semis previously – at Wimbledon in 2014 and the 2017 Australian Open. He put up outstanding fights against Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal respectively, and will look to use that experience against the comparatively green Medvedev.
The 23-year-old has climbed to fifth in the world after reaching the final of the Washington Open and Rogers Cup, and winning the Cincinnati Masters.
But this is the first time Medvedev has been past the fourth round of a grand slam.
The Russian has enjoyed a relatively soft path through the tournament, finally meeting a seeded player in the quarters – Stan Warinka, who he overcame in four sets.
Medvedev and Dimitrov have met twice – both during 2017 – and picked up one win apiece. Dimitrov prevailed at the Queen’s Club Championships, while Medvedev won at the Washington Open.
Dimitrov may struggle to back up from his gruelling encounter with Federer. Meanwhile, Medvedev’s form over the past six weeks is impossible to ignore. But the underdog Dimitrov’s $2.52 head-to-head price is enticing, and the overs options are also very handy value in what looms as a potential marathon.
