Our Day 10 preview sees Roger Federer looking to reverse the trend of 2018 Australian Open quarter-final upsets when he takes on Tomas Berdych.

History: Played 25: Federer 19 V Berdych 6.

Last meeting: July 14, 2017 (Wimbledon – SF): Federer d Berdych 7-6(4), 7-6(4), 6-4.

Final Thoughts: Roger Federer’s Australian Open title defence is set to get its sternest test to date in the form of 19th seed Tomas Berdych.

Federer has not dropped a set in this campaign, powering past Aljaz Bedene, Jan Lennard Struff, Richard Gasquet and Marton Fucsovics with relative ease to reach the quarters. Berdych has had a tougher draw, but after downing Alex de Minaur and Guillermo Garcia Lopez in four-setters, he has disposed of Juan Martin Del Potro and Fabio Fognini in straight sets, giving up less than 10 games in both.

This is the veterans’ fifth encounter at an Australian Open, with Federer winning each of previous four – including the 2016 quarter-final and 2017 third-round clash. Berdych’s last win in the rivalry came at Dubai in 2013 – his fifth win in eight matches against Federer – with the Swiss maestro winning the last eight straight.

Federer is chasing his sixth title in Melbourne, while he has failed to reach the semis just once in the last 14 Australian Opens. Berdych was an Australian Open semi-finalist in 2014-15, and reached that stage at Wimbledon in 2016-17.

Berdych is in electric form – the win over 12th seed del Potro was something special – but little about Roger’s tournament suggests he is capable of bowing out this early. Nevertheless, expect $5.50 outsider Berdych to grab a set off the G.O.A.T. If it’s the first one, another 2018 Australian Open boilover may just be on the cards.
