Final Thoughts: The Best of the Day preview breaks down the biggest match on the MLB schedule, as the St Louis Cardinals aim to respond to yesterday’s heavy defeat at Dodger Stadium.
The LA Dodgers powered to an 8-0 victory in the first instalment of a three-game series. The hosts never looked back after Cody Bellingham’s three-run homer in the first innings.
The Cardinals managed just two hits off rookie Dodgers pitcher Tony Gonsolin, who was outstanding in just his second career start.

The 75-40 Dodgers sit atop the National League West, boasting the best record in the MLB.
They have won eight of their last 11, taking out series against the Nationals, Rockies and Padres in the past couple of weeks.

The 58-53 Cardinals are second in the NL Central; they are still a chance of taking out top spot but they have a couple of teams breathing down their neck.
After a hot 12-2 run following the All-Star Game, St Louis have lost six of their last eight games. They were held to three runs or less in six of those games.

Clayton Kershaw (10-2) will start on the mound for the Dodgers. Miles Mikolas (7-11) gets the ball for the Cardinals.
The Cardinals have won 10 of the last 14 encounters between the teams, including a 4-0 series sweep in St Louis earlier this season.
The Cardinals also carved out a three-games-to-nil whitewash at Dodger Stadium last season.
In a potential playoffs preview, it’s important for the Cardinals to bounce back from yesterday’s shutout.
"The Dodgers are winning the World Series…The only team in baseball that can challenge this rotation is Houston. I'm still taking Walker Buehler and Clayton Kershaw."

But the Dodgers are 44-15 at home this season and on a roll. With Kershaw pitching, they look a sound Best of the Day play.
