Final thoughts: The Best of the Day preview breaks down the Washington Nationals’ bid to wrap up their National League Championship series against the St Louis Cardinals.

The Nationals hold a commanding 3-0 lead heading into Game 4.

It’s been a scintillating MLB post-season ride for Washington fans. First up, they produced a three-run effort in the bottom of the eighth to edge the Brewers 4-3 in the Wild Card round.

Then the Nationals overcame a 2-1 series deficit in the NL Division Series against the Dodgers – who boasted the MLB’s best record – to win in five games.

The Cardinals achieved the same in their NL Division Series against the Braves. But it has been all one-way traffic in their battle with Washington for the National League pennant.

The Nationals grafted out 2-0 and 3-1 victories in the opening two games in St Louis. Starting pitchers Anibal Sanchez and Max Scherzer strangled the Cardinals into submission.

The Nationals put the Cardinals to the sword in Game 3 back in D.C., powering to an emphatic 8-1 win.

Continuing his strong form in this series, Howie Kendrick had three hits, two runs and three RBI. Stephen Strasburg was outstanding with the ball.

The Cardinals’ Dakota Hudson (16-7) and the Nationals’ Patrick Corbin (14-7) are set to start on the mound.

Nationals chasing history

This is already the Nationals’ most successful MLB playoffs campaign. Their only previous NL Championship appearance was in 1981, when they lost to the Dodgers. The Cardinals appeared in four World Series from 2004-13, winning in 2006 and ’11.

This series has contradicting the St Louis’ recent dominance of this rivalry. The Cardinals have won 13 of their last 18 regular-season games against the Nationals – including five of seven this season.

But the horse has already bolted in this series. Kendrick and co. have the Cardinals’ number, while the Nationals’ pitchers are on fire. Expect another convincing Best of the Day result to seal a historic World Series berth for the long-suffering Nationals.
