AFC Champions League Tips – Kawasaki Frontale V Sydney FC

22:00 (AEDT) @ Kawasaki Todoroki Stadium, Kawasaki

History: First meeting

Final Thoughts: Sydney FC confront their first road trip of their Asian Champions League campaign, taking on Japanese champions Kawasaki Frontale.

Sydney played out a scoreless draw with Korean outfit Ulsan Hyundai at Jubilee Oval last Wednesday.

After a rough patch that included losses to the Victory and Roar plus a draw with the Mariners in the space of four games, the Sky Blues have bounced back to form in the A-League.

They won their last two games against Wellington (1-0) and Adelaide (2-0).

Kawasaki Frontale were runaway winners of the J1 League in 2018. They won 21 and drew six of their 34 games to finish 12 points clear of the field.

Akihiro Ienaga was named the competition’s Player of the Year and was one of seven stars from the club in the Team of the Year.

But their start to 2019 has been underwhelming. Kawasaki have recorded three straight draws to kick off their J1 League campaign, while they went down 1-0 away to Shangai SIPG in their ACL opener last week after conceding a late penalty.

Kawasaki, quarter-finalists in 2007 and 2009, are in the AFC Champions League for the first time since 2014.

Sydney FC’s away form in last year’s Champions League was admirable. They secured draw against Shanghai Shenua and Kashima Antlers, before carving out a 4-1 win over Suwon Samsung Bluewings.

But they have never beaten a Japanese opponent in the ACL, drawing four and losing four of eight. The away draw against Kashima – who went on to win the competition – should provide confidence, however.

Sydney are whopping $7.00 outsiders but certainly have the class and experience to take a win or draw away from this Japanese sojourn.

Tip: Handicap – Sydney FC +1 @ $2.75
