FIBA World Cup Tips – Australia V Czech Republic

23:00 (AEST) @ Shanghai Oriental Sports Center, Shanghai

Australia square off against the Czech Republic in the FIBA World Cup quarter-finals, with both nations chasing a historic semi berth.

The Boomers have reached four FIBA World Cup quarter-finals – most recently in 1994 – but have never won one. Bounced in the Round of 16 at the 2014 World Cup, they were favoured to make the final four after their semi-final charge at the Rio Olympics.

This is the Czech Republic’s first-ever FIBA World Cup campaign. It’s been a remarkable rise, given they finished 20th in the 2017 EuroBasket competition.

Australia are unbeaten in five matches, including second-stage victories over Dominican Republic (82-76) and France (100-98).

The Boomers overcame a four-point three-quarter time deficit to roll a very strong French side (and avoid a quarter-final showdown with USA).

Patty Mills top-scored with 30 points, while fellow NBA stars Joe Ingles (23 pts), Aron Baynes (21 pts, 5 reb), Matthew Dellavedova (9 ast) and Andrew Bogut (6 reb) were strong contributors.

Despite a loss to Greece in their last match, the Czech Republic squeaked into the quarters – a mere one for-and-against point ahead of Greece. Their previous 93-71 thrashing of Brazil proved crucial.

Chicago Bulls point guard Tomas Satroansky has been a standout, putting up 13 points, 9 assists and 8 rebounds against Greece. He was also dominant against Brazil.

Australia are a short $1.16 favourite, while the Czech Republic have been afforded a 10.5-point start.

The underdogs have proven themselves a gritty outfit throughout the FIBA World Cup. But the Boomers look a class above and should lead this Best of the Day clash from go to whoa.
