World No.34 Riske enjoyed a breakout run at Wimbledon this year. She upset Belinda Bencic and Ash Barty on her way to the quarter-finals, where she went down to Serena Williams in three.
The 29-year-old downed 24th seed Garbine Muguruza in the opening round at Flushing Meadows but crashed out in straight sets to Jelena Ostapenko in the second.
Kerber currently sits 14th in the WTA rankings. But it’s been an underwhelming 2019 season for the three-time grand slam winner.
She reached the finals at Indian Wells and the Eastbourne International, but exited in the second round at Wimbledon. Since then, the 31-year-old has lost three straight first-round matches at the Rogers Cup, Cincinnati Masters and US Open.
Kristina Mladenovic rolled Kerber in the first round in New York.
Kerber leads the head-to-head ledger against Riske 3-1. But Riske came from a set down to beat Kerber in Mallorca last year – their only encounter in the past five years.
Baseline specialist Kerber will rely on Riske’s mistakes as she attempts to break out of her form slump. But if she doesn’t take the match to Riske, it could play into the American underdog’s hands.

Riske has added some big-name scalps to her résumé in a career-best 2019 and is difficult to ignore as a juicy outsider.
