AFL Tips – Collingwood Magpies V Gold Coast Suns

19:10 (AEST) @ The Gabba, Brisbane

History: Played 9: Collingwood 7 V Gold Coast 2

Last meeting: Round 20, 2019: Collingwood 18.12 (120) d Gold Coast 8.3 (51) at MCG

Final thoughts: The Best of the Day preview takes a deep dive into the AFL Round 17 closer between Collingwood Magpies and Gold Coast Suns.

A win will seal the 8-6-1 Magpies’ finals berth and elevate them to sixth with one round to go. After winning four of five games to reroute a shaky campaign, Nathan Buckley’s side went down to the Lions 6.6 (42) to 5.4 (34) in Round 15.

A bye last week gave injury-ravaged Collingwood a 10-day lead-in to this fixture. It’s allowed key trio Adam Treloar, Jordan De Goey and Travis Varcoe to return.

The 5-9-1 Suns have skidded to 14th after winning just one of their last eight. Following the high of a 63-point thrashing of the Kangaroos in Round 14, the Suns came off the bye only to crash to a 45-point loss to the Lions last Wednesday.

Ben Ainsworth (illness) and rookie Connor Budarick (broken collarbone) are both out, while Sam Flanders has been omitted. Veteran Jarrod Harbrow is back from injury, joined by Nick Holman and Sean Lemmens as inclusions.

Magpies too hot for Suns in recent seasons

The Magpies have won their last five straight against the Suns by an average margin of 52.6 points.

Last season’s clash finished in a 69-point landslide to Collingwood. Will Hoskin-Elliott kicked four of the Pies’ 18 goals, while Steele Sidebottom (2 goals, 27 disposals, 7 tackles) starred. Ben King and Alex Sexton both slotted three majors in a heavily beaten Suns side.

With plenty on the line and some of the injured cavalry returning, the Magpies are primed to rack up a big win here. The Suns are on a tight turnaround and should be lambs to the Best of the Day slaughter.

Tip: Handicap – Magpies -22.5 @ $1.90
