Final Thoughts: Australia are aiming to end an arduous season on a high – and avoid a record-breaking losing streak – against England at Twickenham.
England have won five straight Tests against the Wallabies. A sixth would be a new record between the archrivals.
Following their dour loss to Wales, the Wallabies’ 26-7 win over Italy eased a little pressure. But it was far from convincing. Marika Kroibete bagged a double in a 14-0 first half but the result was only sealed when Will Genia dotted down in the 78th minute.
Meanwhile, David Pocock is racing the clock to be fit for this Test. Koroibete has been replaced on the wing by rookie Jack Maddocks, but the big talking point is Bernard Foley’s retention at No.12 ahead of Kurtley Beale.
Following their contentious 12-11 win over South Africa and equally controversial 16-15 loss to the All Blacks, England eased past Japan 35-15 last week.
Ben Youngs and Owen Farrell return in the halves, Ben Te’o has been named in the centres and NZ-born Brad Shields is back in the back-row.
Since Australia’s resounding World Cup pool win in 2015, Eddie Jones has steered England to a 3-0 series win Down Under and one-off home wins over the Wallabies in 2016 (37-21) and 2017 (30-6).
England have won nine of the last 11 Tests between the nations. Only one of the last six were decided by less than 11 points.
England have hardly set the world on fire of late. But their superiority at the set-piece and miserly defence should see them strangle the Wallabies out of the contest.
