Final Thoughts: Big guns South Africa are already confronting a do-or-die scenario in their fourth Cricket World Cup outing. Unpredictable opponents West Indies are aiming to stay on the positive side of the ledger after going down to Australia in their last outing.
The Proteas have been the rank disappointment of the tournament so far.
They were pounded by England in the Cricket World Cup opener by 104 runs, before crashing to Bangladesh by 21 runs.
Batting first against India on Wednesday, South Africa could only muster 9/227. Chris Morris top-scored with a modest 42 off 34 balls. India cruised to a six-wicket win with 15 balls to spare, despite a strong bowling performance from Kagiso Rabada (2/39).
West Indies made an early statement with a seven-wicket demolition of Pakistan. They reached the target of 106 in just the 14th over.
But the perennial enigmas of world cricket blew an opportunity in their second game after reducing Australia to 4/38. The defending champs rallied to post 288 and the Windies fell 15 runs short. Shai Hope (68 off 105) and Jason Holder (51 off 57) were the only batsman to hang around in a disappointing run-chase.
South Africa won by 257 runs when the nations met at the 2015 Cricket World Cup after setting a target of 409. But a 52-ball hundred by now-retired great AB de Villiers underpinned that blistering performance. This year, the players capable of providing de Villiers-like influence are in subpar form.
Revelations of de Villiers’ attempted comeback, Dale Steyn’s exit due to injury and Lungi Ngidi’s injury has also compounded South Africa’s woes.
There’s always trepidation backing the Windies. But given both teams’ form to date they are handsome value as narrow underdogs.
