Final Thoughts: Bangladesh and Sri Lanka are desperately attempting to keep their Cricket World Cup semi hopes alive in Bristol.
Both teams head into their fourth match of the tournament with one win on the board.
Bangladesh opened their campaign with a stunning 21-run upset of South Africa. They solidified their dark horse claims by giving New Zealand a fright in a two-wicket loss.
But a reality check came in the form of a 106-run loss to England on Saturday. Bangladesh struggled with the ball as the hosts racked up 6/386.
Shakib Al Hasan – who scored half-centuries in Bangladesh’s first two games – continued his hot form streak with 121 off 119 balls. But Msuhfiqur Rahim (44 off 50) was the only other batsman to make more than 28 as they were bowled out for 280.
After copping a 10-wicket caning from New Zealand, Sri Lanka scrapped their way to a 34-run win over minnows Afghanistan. Kusal Perera (78 off 81) and man-of-the-match Nuwan Pradeep (4/31) spearheaded the victory.
But Friday’s scheduled clash with Pakistan was a washout.
The nations’ last six completed ODI encounters have been split three wins apiece. Sri Lanka won a Bangladesh-hosted series 2-1 in January last year, but Bangladesh romped to a 137-run in September’s Asia Cup in Dubai. Mushfiqur Rahim scored a brilliant 144 in the latter.
Bangladesh are warm $1.68 favourites against the 1996 Cricket World Cup champs – and it’s hard to argue.
Shakib Al Hasan’s blistering form is also hard to resist.
