Final Thoughts: Pakistan and Sri Lanka both responded to heavy first-up losses with solid bounce-back victories. The subcontinent rivals get a huge opportunity to boost their Cricket World Cup semi-final hopes in Bristol.
Pakistan were hammered by seven wicket by West Indies after being skittled for just 105. But they put their campaign back on track sensationally by upsetting big guns England by 14 runs.
Mohammad Hafeez (84 off 62), Babar Azam (63 off 66) and Sarfaraz Ahmed (55 off 44) stood tall as Pakistan reached 8/348. Wahab Riaz (3/82) was expensive but took some key wickets. Shadab Khan and Mohammad Amir took two scalps each.
Sri Lanka kicked off with a dismal 10-wicket loss to New Zealand. They were bowled out for 136 and failed to take a wicket as the Kiwis picked off the target in 16.1 overs.
They got on the board with a scratchy 34-run (DLS method) win over minnows Afghanistan. Kusal Perera (78 off 81) played a lone hand as Sri Lanka made a modest 201 all out. But Nuwan Pradeep (4/31) took man-of-the-match honours and Lasith Malinga (3/39) was also excellent as Afghanistan crashed to 152 all out.
Pakistan have won eight of their last nine ODIs against Sri Lanka, including the last six straight.
Both sides were equally poor in their first outings but Pakistan’s second performance was light years ahead of Sri Lanka’s. Consequently, they are $1.33 favourites.
Pakistan have hit nine sixes to Sri Lanka’s three at the Cricket World Cup to date. There’s decent value in the Most Sixes market in this one.
