History: Played 20: England 16 V Bangladesh 4

Last meeting: June 1, 2017: England d Bangladesh by 8 wickets

Final Thoughts: England and Bangladesh both won their first Cricket World Cup assignments – but both will be desperate to bounce back from losses in their second games.

England know all too well how Bangladesh can be in the tournament format. They suffered a shock 15-run loss in Adelaide at the 2015 Cricket World Cup.

Bangladesh have already signalled their ability to be a semi-finals dark horse in 2019. They stunned South Africa with a 21-run victory last Sunday. Mushfiqur Rahim (78 from 80), Shakib Al Hasan (75 from 84) and Mahmudullah (46* off 33) starred in building a match-winning total of 6/330.

Bangladesh lined up against New Zealand three days, going down by two wickets. They were bowled out for a subpar 244 in the final over. But their bowlers kept them in the contest to the bitter end with regular breakthroughs; Mosaddek Hossain (2/33), Mohammad Saifuddin (2/41) and Mehidy Hasan (2/47) were economical and took big wickets.

Hosts England, meanwhile, were brought back to earth after their 104-run belting of South Africa in the tournament opener.

The title favourites crashed to a 14-run loss to Pakistan on Monday. Chasing 349 for victory, England came up short despite brilliant centuries from Joe Root (107 from 104) and Jos Buttler (103 from 76).

England have a dominant all-time record in the rivalry. But Bangladesh’s four ODI wins against England have come in the nations’ last eight encounters – including that boilover at the last Cricket World Cup.

Bangladesh represent good value as $5.80 underdogs, but England possess too much batting firepower to sink to a second straight upset loss.

Opener Jason Roy made a half-century against South Africa but fell for just eight against Pakistan. He shapes as the danger-man Bangladesh need to remove early.
