Final Thoughts: Australia have come back from the brink to force a game five decider in their ODI series against India.
The hosts won the opening two games by six wickets and eight runs respectively. But the tourists won the third encounter by 32 runs, largely thanks to a 193-run stand from under-pressure openers Aaron Finch (93) and Usman Khawaja (104). The mercurial Glenn Maxwell’s 47 off 31 helped Australia through to 5/313.
Virat Kohli (123 off 95) played largely a lone hand as India were skittled for 281. Pat Cummins, Jhye Richardson and Adam Zampa each picked up three wickets.
Shikhar Dhawan (143) and Rohit Sharma (95) steered India to 9/358 in game four, with Cummins snaring five wickets.
But Khawaja (91), Peter Handscomb (117) and newcomer Ashton Turner (84 not out off 43) led a record-breaking run chase, Australia winning with four wickets and 13 balls to spare.
India have won 10 of their last 14 one-dayers against Australia. The teams’ last series in India saw the hosts prevail 4-1 in 2017. India also won the Australia-hosted series in January 2-1.
Led by Khawaja – who has scored 283 runs at 70.75 in this series – and Cummins, Australia’s batting order and bowling attack are firing in unison. They are worth backing to grab a confidence-boosting victory ahead of the World Cup.
