Final Thoughts: Australia have kept their ODI series with India alive with an impressive game three victory. But they need another win in Mohali to force a fifth-game decider.
The tourists was the third encounter by 32 runs, largely thanks to a 193-run stand from under-pressure openers Aaron Finch (93) and Usman Khawaja (104). The mercurial Glenn Maxwell’s 47 off 31 helped Australia through to 5/313.
Virat Kohli (123 off 95) played largely a lone hand as India were skittled for 281. Pat Cummins, Jhye Richardson and Adam Zampa each picked up three wickets.
Australia were restricted to 7/236 from their 50 overs in game one. Usman Khawaja (50) top-scored but was one of several to fail to capitalise on a start. MS Dhoni (59*) and Kedar Jadhav (81*) unbroken 141-run stand guided India home.
A brilliant performance from Cummins (4/29) saw India bowled out for 250 in the second clash encounter despite Kohli’s 116.
But after an encouraging 83-run opening stand between Aaron Finch and Usman Khawaja, Australia fell eight runs short when they were bowled out in the final over. Marcus Stonis (52) looked to have the match in hand but couldn’t finish it off.
India have now won 10 of their last 13 one-dayers against Australia. The teams’ last series in India saw the hosts prevail 4-1 in 2017. India also won the Australia-hosted series in January 2-1.
Australia will be looking for more from Shaun Marsh, who has made just 16 and 7 since his return. Kohli has scored at least 43 in his last eight ODIs – the Aussies must negate his influence.
But Australia look over the odds to level up at 2-all.
