Final Thoughts: After being humbled 2-0 in the T20I series, India are up 2-0 in their ODI series against archrivals Australia. The World Cup favourites wrap it up with a victory in game three in Ranchi.
Australia were restricted to 7/236 from their 50 overs in game one. Usman Khawaja (50) top-scored but was one of several to fail to capitalise on a start. MS Dhoni (59*) and Kedar Jadhav (81*) unbroken 141-run stand guided India home.
A brilliant performance from Pat Cummins (4/29) saw India bowled out for 250 in the second encounter. Virat Kohli’s brilliant 116 and a rapid 46 from Vijay Shankhar held an otherwise dismal innings together.
But after an encouraging 83-run opening stand between Aaron Finch and Usman Khawaja, Australia fell eight runs short when they were bowled out in the final over. Marcus Stonis (52) looked to have the match in hand but couldn’t finish it off.
India have now won 10 of their last 12 one-dayers against Australia. The teams’ last series in India saw the hosts prevail 4-1. India also won the Australia-hosted series in January 2-1, with Dhoni’s peerless run-chasing calmness guiding the tourists to consecutive wins after Australia won the opener.
Australia are $2.85 outsiders to keep the series alive. They will be looking for more from No.3 Shaun Marsh, who made just 16 in his return on Tuesday. Kohli has scored at least 43 in his last seven ODIs – the Aussies must negate his influence.
After his last outing, Cummins shapes as a massive key to the tourists’ hopes.
