Final Thoughts: After being humbled 2-0 in the T20I series, India drew first ODI blood against Australia with a six-wicket win with 10 balls to spare.
Australia were restricted to 7/236 from their 50 overs. Usman Khawaja (50), Marcus Stoinis (37) and Glenn Maxwell (40) were unable to go on from solid starts. But Alex Carey (36*) and Nathan Coulter-Nile (28) chipped in impressively down the order.
Rohit Sharma (37) and Virat Kohli (44) laid a solid foundation before India slumped to 4/99. MS Dhoni (59*) and Kedar Jadhav (81*) finished it off expertly with an unbroken 141-run stand.
Maxwell put the cricketing world on notice with 56 and a spellbinding 113* as Australia snatched two final-over T20I triumphs last week. But they risk the confidence from that success going to waste if they are unable to strike back in the ODIs.
India have won nine of their last 11 one-dayers against Australia. The archrivals’ last series in India saw the hosts prevail 4-1, with Rohit Sharma piling on 296 runs at 59.20 and Aaron Finch scoring 250 at 83.33.
India also won the Australia-hosted series in January 2-1, with Dhoni’s peerless run-chasing calmness guiding the tourists to consecutive wins after Australia won the opener.
Finch is horribly out of form and under pressure to hold onto his spot for the World Cup. But he remains one of the world’s most destructive openers. The skipper is worth taking a chance on to respond for the underdog Aussies like champions invariably do
