Friday’s Big Bash League preview charges down the wicket with BBL tips for a vital showdown between the Adelaide Strikers and Melbourne Stars as both teams grapple with ODI absentees.
History: Played 7: Stars 4 V Strikers 3
Last meeting: January 9, 2018: Strikers d Stars by 8 wickets at Adelaide Oval
Final Thoughts: Friday’s midtable clash between Melbourne Stars and Adelaide Strikers could have a significant impact on the BBL standings. Both teams have a 3-3 record, with the Stars ahead in fourth spot on net run rate.
The Stars have won three of their last four, but crashed to a six-wicket loss to the Scorchers on Wednesday with their Australian ODI rep absent. Ben Dunk blasted 62 off 47 and Dwayne Bravo took 2/18, but it wasn’t enough to stop the Scorchers from cruising to victory with 14 balls left at the MCG.
Similarly, the Strikers’ two-game winning streak was halted in a six-wicket home defeat to the Sixers on Sunday.
Jake Weatherald (50 off 40) and Rashid Khan (2/25) contributed strongly for the defending champs but the Sixers got home with 10 balls to spare.
The teams’ last five clashes were won by the home team, with the Strikers on a three-game winning streak against the Stars at Adelaide Oval.
Last season the Strikers prevailed at home by eight wickets with eight balls to spare. Strikers skipper Travis Head (53 off 32) scooped man-of-the-match honours, negating Stars gun Glenn Maxwell’s brilliant 60 off 39.
Maxwell is on ODI duty alongside Stars teammates Handscomb, Stoinis and Zampa. The Strikers are missing Carey, Stanlake and Siddle, but the axed Head will have a point to prove.
The Strikers’ superior depth and home-ground advantage sees them head in as short $1.49 favourites. We’re tipping Head to use his international snub as a spur to top-score for his side.
