The daily Big Bash League preview charges down the wicket with BBL tips as Sydney Sixers aim to put a stop to Perth Scorchers’ hot streak.
History: Played 18: Stars 13 V Renegades 5
Last meeting: January 10, 2020: Stars d Renegades by 7 wickets at Marvel Stadium
Final Thoughts: Melbourne Stars and Melbourne Renegades gear up for the first of two BBL derbies in four days on Sunday night. It’s a huge match for the fourth-placed Stars – part of a four-team logjam tied on 20 points – but the playoffs ship has all but sailed for the 2-8 Renegades.
After losing five of their previous six games, the spluttering Stars roared back into form on Friday night. They crushed the Strikers by 111 runs, with opener Andre Fletcher (89* off 49) finally firing and Adam Zampa (5/17).
Recently out-of-sorts skipper Glenn Maxwell (37 off 28 and 2/12) also had a fine all-round game.
The 2-8 Renegades’ drought-breaking win over the Strikers was tempered by a five-wicket loss to the Heat on Thursday.
Beau Webster (50* off 40) and Jake Fraser-McGuirk (40 off 33) guided the ’Gades to 6/149 after a shaky start. But despite the miserly efforts of Matthew Kuhnemann (1/15) and Mark Steketee (2/24), the Heat cruised to the target with eight balls left.
The Stars enjoyed some retribution for their nightmarish BBL|08 final loss to the Renegades, winning both regular-season clashes in a canter last season.
They carved out an eight-wicket win at the MCG; Marcus Stoinis blasted 68 not out off 55 balls to get his side to the target of 143 with seven balls to spare. Maxwell (83* off 45) was the headliner in a seven-wicket victory at Marvel Stadium. Shaun Marsh (43 and 63) top-scored for the Renegades in both matches.
One of the shortest-priced favourites of the BBL|10 season at $1.55, it’s hard seeing the Stars getting tipped up here.
