Sunday’s Big Bash League preview charges down the wicket with BBL tips for a vital showdown between the Perth Scorchers and Sydney Sixers.
History: Played 13: Scorchers 9 V Sixers 4
Last meeting: December 22, 2018: Sixers d Scorchers by 17 runs at SCG
Final Thoughts: The fourth-placed Sydney Sixers stand in the way of Perth Scorchers’ bid to climb off the bottom of the BBL08 standings.
These sides met three weeks ago at the SCG, with the Sixers notching a 17-run upset result. Daniel Hughes (62 off 44) and Jordan Silk (67* off 49) produced an outstanding 124-run stand to guide the Sixers to 4/164. Ashton Turner (49 off 39) and Hilton Cartwright (53 off 39) put on 99 for the Scorchers after a disastrous start, but the visitors came up short. Steve O’Keefe (3/19) took man-of-the-match honours.
The 4-3 Sixers have won three of their last four. Joe Denly rocketed into form with 76* off 60 as they rolled the Strikers in Adelaide by six wickets with 10 balls to spare last Sunday.
The 2-5 Scorchers snapped a three-game losing streak with a vital six-wicket victory over the Stars at the MCG on Wednesday. Cameron Bancroft led their successful chase with 59 off 42, but Andrew Tye was the real star with 4/18.
Scorchers trio Turner, Jhye Rhichardson and Mitch Marsh are all on ODI duty. Nathan Lyon, who is yet to play for the Sixers this season, is the Sixers’ only rep in the Australian one-day squad.
Last month’s result ended a three-match losing streak against the Scorchers for the Sixers. Last season Perth grabbed a six-wicket win with 11 balls remaining at the SCG, and a six-wicket win with five balls left at the WACA.
The Scorchers head in as narrow favourites and home-ground advantage should give them the necessary edge, with the Sixers winless in Perth since 2012.
