The daily Big Bash League preview charges down the wicket with BBL tips as Perth Scorchers and Melbourne Renegades strive to claw their way back into the playoffs picture.
History: Played 13: Scorchers 10 V Renegades 3
Last meeting: December 12, 2020: Renegades d Scorchers by 7 wickets at Blundstone Arena
Final Thoughts: Perth Scorchers and Melbourne Renegades both have just one win on the board in BBL|10. The loser of this this encounter will find themselves right behind the eight-ball as far as reaching the finals goes.
The teams met on the opening weekend of the BBL|10 season. The Renegades powered to just their third win in 13 matches against the Scorchers, a seven-wicket success in Hobart. The Scorchers could only manage 130 – with Josh Lalor and Kane Richardson each grabbing three wickets for Melbourne – before Shaun Marsh (62 off 47) laid the platform for the Scorchers to reach the target with 21 balls to spare.
But the Renegades have lost five straight games since that early victory – including landslide defeats to the Sixers (145 runs) and Thunder (129 runs).
Their most recent losses were far more respectable: by two wickets to the Sixers and seven runs to the Thunder. Meanwhile, Marsh’s stormed to the top of the BBL run charts with match-high scores of 67 and 87 in those games.
The Scorchers banked their first of the season on New Year’s Eve, a seven-wicket cruise against the Strikers. Jhye Richardson took 3/19, while Jason Roy (49 off 32), Josh Inglis (44 off 31) and Mitch Marsh (38 off 24) steered the WA outfit to the target of 147 with 14 balls left.
Mitch Marsh’s modest season tally of 108 is the Scorchers’ highest. But the recent arrival of English openers Roy and Liam Livingstone is a huge boost to their batting arsenal.
The Scorchers are deserving $1.61 favourites at home. Roy, with 70 runs from two innings so far, is hard to go past as a top runscorer option.
