Monday’s Big Bash League preview heads to Marvel Stadium for the Palmerbet Sports Team’s tips between the faltering Melbourne Renegades and the undefeated Hobart Hurricanes.
History: Played 7: Renegades 5 V Hurricanes 2
Last meeting: December 21, 2017: Renegades d Hurricanes by 7 wickets at Bellerive Oval, Hobart
Final Thoughts: What can you say about the Hurricanes? 5 from 5 and confidence at record levels. Superb team structure and a well defined game plan, the Cane Train is turning into the Cane Bullet Train!
The Canes snuck home with a ball to spare against the Thunder after a couple of lucky breaks and some late heroics from George Bailey (30 from 17). Set 162 for Victory, it was never going to be enough once the leading batsmen in the comp, D’Arcy Short got moving (64 from 42).
The Renegades are on a three game skid and in real danger of being out of finals contention if they drop this one. They’ve lost 9 wickets in each of their last three at bats and haven’t had a batsmen score over 33 in that time. Cameron White must stand up. The return of Aaron Finch also couldn’t be better timed.
The Hurricanes game plan is simple. Get early wickets and restrict the opposition to 165 or less. Then the opening pair of Matthew Wade and D’Arcy Short go hard at the quicks, making the back half of the innings easier to manage. It works well in Hobart and at night. We don’t think the pitch at Marvel or the closed roof will suit the Hurricanes. The Gades should play as many spinners as possible and suffocate the Canes.
We’re surprised the Renegades aren’t longer odds, but we’ll take them happily because of the slow Marvel pitch.
