History: Played 216: Lakers 126 V Jazz 90
Last meeting: December 4, 2019: Lakers 121 d Jazz 96 at Vivint Smart Home Arena
Final Thoughts: LA Lakers and Utah Jazz have balanced first-up win in the Orlando bubble with convincing losses in their second outings.
The 50-15 Lakers still boast a healthy lead at the top of the Western Conference. They held off the Clippers 103-101 in a seesawing clash on the opening day of the NBA’s resumption. Anthony Davis top-scored with 34 points, while LeBron James (16 pts, 11 reb, 7 ast) came up with clutch plays as both ends in the dying stages.
James led the Lakers in points (20), rebounds (10) and assists (5) two days later against the Raptors, but Davis was subdued in a 107-92 loss. The Lakers led at halftime but ran out of steam in a one-sided fourth quarter.
The 42-24 Jazz sit fifth in the congested West standings. Jordan Clarkson (23 pts, 5 reb, 3 ast) played a key role off the bench in a 106-104 eclipse of the Pelicans on Friday (AEST). But, like the Lakers, backing up 48 hours later against a fresh team proved difficult for the Jazz.
Utah were down by 24 points at halftime against Oklahoma City, eventually losing 110-94. Donovan Mitchell top-scored with just 13 points – a reflection of the Thunder’s defensive dominance of the Jazz.
After winning just two of the previous 13 between the teams, the Lakers have won three straight against the Jazz.
LeBron averaged 26 points and 11 assists across two Lakers victories this season – 95-86 at Staples Center and 121-96 in Salt Lake City.
The Lakers are 35-29-1 against the line this season. The Jazz are 31-33-2 ATS.
Both sides struggled on Sunday (AEST), but the Lakers’ initial showing against a fellow heavyweight was impressive. The Jazz have some serious kinks to work out – and attempting to do so against LeBron and AD is a tough ask.
