The daily preview muscles into the paint with NBA tips for San Antonio Spurs’ daunting home assignment against in-form Brooklyn Nets.
12:30 (AEDT), Mon 2nd Mar @ AT&T Center, San Antonio
History: Played 101: Spurs 76 V Nets 25
Last meeting: March 6, 2020: Nets 139 d Spurs 120 at Barclays Center
Final Thoughts: San Antonio are looking to consolidate their spot inside the Western Conference’s top six, but Brooklyn Nets are flying in the East and shape as a tough opponent for the underdone Spurs.
The Spurs endured a 10-day break with four games postponed, before losing 102-99 at Oklahoma City. But they rallied with a tight 117-114 home victory over the Pelicans to improve to 17-12 and fifth in the West.
DeMar DeRozan (32 pts, 11 ast) was outstanding, with Dejounte Murray (18 pts, 6 reb, 7 ast) starring in the back-court and LaMarcus Aldridge putting up 21 points from the bench.
The COVID factor is still biting the Spurs with Derrick White, Rudy Gay, Devin Vassell and Quinndary Weatherspoon all unavailable. Keldon Johnson is a chance of returning from health and safety protocols.
The 22-13 Nets won eight straight – including the scalps of the Lakers and Clippers – before crashing 115-98 to the Mavericks on the weekend. Kevin Durant remains sidelined but Kyrie Irving will return after missing the Dallas clash.
James Harden has been in spectacular form, averaging 29.3 points, 9 rebounds and 10 assists in the Nets’ past seven games.
The Spurs have won 29 of the teams’ last 34 regular-season encounters. But the season series have been split one-all for the past two years.
The Nets are, however, aiming to snap a 17-game losing streak in San Antonio – last beating the Spurs in Texas in 2002.
San Antonio have travelled well this season but are only 8-8 at home. They have covered 17 of 29 games – the fourth-best ATS record in the league. Brooklyn are 9-7 on the road and 18-17 overall against the line.
The Harden-Irving combination is blossoming and should see the Nets break their AT&T Center drought.
