History: Played 187: Jazz 107 V Mavericks 80
Last meeting: January 29, 2021: Jazz 120 d Mavericks 101 at Vivint Smart Home Arena
Final Thoughts: The in-form Dallas Mavericks are inching towards the NBA Western Conference’s all-important top-six. But their bid for a fifth straight victory will meet some hefty resistance in the form of the West-leading Utah Jazz.
The 27-21 Mavericks enjoyed a highly successful road trip over the past week, winning all four games against the Thunder (127-106), Celtics (113-108), Knicks (99-86) and Wizards (109-87).
MVP contender Luka Doncic has been on fire. He is averaging 28.6 points, 8.1 rebounds and 8.8 assists. The likes of Jalen Brunson and Boban Marjanovic have been providing Doncic with support and the Mavs with balance. Kristaps Porzingis and Josh Richardson both missed the win over the Wizards but could return tonight.
The 38-11 Jazz continue to keep the chasing pack at arm’s length, putting together another nine-game winning streak. Most recently they decimated Orlando Magic 137-91.
Donovan Mitchell is averaging 25.6 points for the season and is shooting over 40 percent from three-point range. Meanwhile, big man Rudy Gobert is pulling down 13.2 rebounds a game.
The Jazz have won eight of their last 10 against the Mavericks, including both clashes so far this season. The Mavs were overwhelmed 116-104 and 120-101 when they faced the Jazz twice in the space of three days in Salt Lake City.
Rudy Gobert went off for 29 points and 20 rebounds in the first encounter. Bogdan Bogdanovic top-scored for Utah with 32 points in the latter.
Dallas are a modest 11-10 at home after losing three of their last four as hosts. Utah are 16-9 on the road but have won only five of their last 11 away.
This shapes as a solid test for the Jazz after a soft recent draw. Doncic will be primed for the individual battle with Mitchell and the Mavericks are a value underdog option on the back of their impressive away exploit.
