Final Thoughts: Dallas Mavericks host Milwaukee Bucks with both sides’ recent winning runs ended by out-of-form opponents.
The 28-22 Mavericks were knocking on the door of the Western Conference’s top-six after winning five straight, culminating in a eye-catching 111-103 upset of the NBA-leading Jazz. Luka Doncic was the catalyst for the statement win with 31 points, 9 rebounds and 8 assists.
But the Mavs followed that up with a bewildering 102-93 loss to the lowly Rockets. The efforts of Doncic (23 pts, 9 reb, 5 ast) and Kristaps Porzingis (23 pts, 12 reb) were not enough to compensate for Dallas’ mediocre peformance through the middle stages of the game.
Now they head home for a back-to-back assignment against one of the East’s heavyweights.
The 32-18 Bucks appeared back on track with three straight wins. Giannis Antetokounmpo (47 pts, 12 reb) was dominant in a 127-109 win in Portland, while Jrue Holiday (33 pts, 11 ast) took over in the marquee man’s absence in a one-point defeat of Sacramento.
But Giannis sat out another game and the Bucks were edged 122-121 by slumping Golden State. Khris Middleton (28 pts, 7 ast) and Holiday (29 pts) were prominent, but they missed Antetokounmpo’s influence. He is no certainty to line up in Dallas due to
The Bucks claimed a narrow 112-109 win when the teams met in Milwaukee in mid-January. Antetokounmpo top-scored with 31 points but went just 1-for-10 from the free-throw line. A couple of big threes down the stretch from Khris Middleon (25 pts, 8 reb, 6 ast) proved crucial. Luka Doncic (28 pts, 10 reb, 13 ast) produced a triple-double in a losing effort.
The Mavs have won five of their last six against the Bucks in Dallas.
Giannis’ dodgy knee is the key factor here, while the Mavs’ shock loss in Houston – and a 24-hour turnaround – are reasons to be skeptical of the home side. But Dallas’ win over Utah is still fresh in the memory and they still shape as the better bet as narrow underdogs.
