Final Thoughts: Miami Heat and Dallas Mavericks are both striving to hold a position in the top six of their respective conferences as the NBA regular season heads down the home stretch.
The 35-30 Heat have moved up to sixth in the East courtesy of seven wins in their last nine games. They have put away the Spurs (116-111), Cavs (124-107) and Hornets (121-111) in their last three outings.
Jimmy Butler (18 pts, 8 reb, 8 ast) and Bam Adebayo (20 pts, 7 reb, 10 ast) led the way in Charlotte for a Miami side finding some consistency on the offensive end. Kendrick Nunn’s shooting has also been a key factor in the Heat’s timely surge.
The 36-28 Mavericks are fifth in the West, winning six of their last eight. They defeat the Pistons 115-105 without Luka Doncic last week – Tim Hardaway Jr going off for 42 points – before edging the Wizards 125-124 with Doncic (31 pts, 12 reb, 20 ast) in dominant touch.
But Dallas were upset by Sacramento – and the league’s worst defence – for the third time in a fortnight on the weekend. Doncic (30 pts, 6 reb, 6 ast) played a largely lone hand in the 111-99 loss.
Coming into this season, the Heat had won 16 of their last 19 against the Mavs – including the last six straight.
But Doncic (27 pts, 15 reb, 7 ast) led Dallas to a 93-83 home win on New Year’s Day.
The Heat are 19-14 at home this season (13-18-2 against the spread). The Mavericks are 19-13 on the road (18-14 ATS) and have won nine of their last 11 away.
Both sides have injury issues; the Heat are missing Tyler Herro and Victor Oladipo, the Mavs are unlikely to get Kristaps Porzingis back from a two-game layoff.
The Heat’s current momentum and deeper line-up gives them the edge of the Mavs.
