History: Played 194: Suns 105 V Nuggets 88
Last meeting: June 12, 2021 (Game 3): Suns 116 d Nuggets 102 at Ball Arena
Final Thoughts: Phoenix Suns are just one win away from their first Western Conference Finals appearance since 2010. Denver Nuggets are down to their last chance, eyeing off a turnaround in Game 4 to avoid a horrific sweep after losing the first three games by 14-plus points.
The Suns powered away to a 122-105 victory in Game 1. The Nuggets led by one at halftime but were swamped in the remaining two terms. The ageless Chris Paul (21 pts, 6 reb, 11 ast) again led the way. He was magnificent in the fourth quarter, scoring or assisting in 20 of the Suns’ 34 points. NBA MVP Jokic was restricted to 22 points, 9 rebounds and 3 assists.
The Suns’ dominance at both ends of the floor was even more pronounced in Game 2, the hosts winning every quarter in a 123-98 blowout. CP3 (17 pts, 15 ast) again mesmerised the Nuggets. Devin Booker (18 pts, 10 reb) top-scored with a modest tally, one of seven Suns to hit double-figures. Jokic (24 pts, 13 reb, 6 ast) was head and shoulders above his teammates.
MVP’s historic showing not enough for Nuggets
Jokic put his name among some all-time greats with 32 points, 20 rebounds and 10 assists in Game 3 in Denver. He joined icons Wilt Chamberlain and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar as the only players with a 30-20-10 performance in a playoff game. The only problem was the rest of the Nuggets starting line-up combined for just 30 points in a 116-102 loss.
Paul (27 pts, 6 reb, 8 ast) did the business once again for the Suns. Booker (28 pts, 6 reb, 4 ast) shone and Deandre Ayton notched a third straight double-double.
The Nuggets’ back-court is struggling: Austin Rivers and Facundo Campazzo have scored just 20 points combined across the past two games. Monte Morris (21 pts, 5 ast) found his range again off the bench after a couple of dismal outings, but Jokic needs far more support. The previously in-form Michael Porter Jr’s contributions have been comparatively modest.
The Suns are $1.65 favourites to close it out in Mile High City – and it’s hard to see the Nuggets finding the answers required to keep the series alive.
