The NBA season has finally tipped off, and now that we’ve seen the teams on the floor, the Clippers and Lakers are sharpening as championship favourites.

Bad Beat Opens The Season

Pelicans punters will have been sitting comfortably with four minutes left in the first game of the NBA season. Their team had a six-point lead as well as the +7 headstart. As the Raptors chipped away and forced overtime, the seven-point spread still felt comfortable given how well the Pelicans had played in regulation.

Their form couldn’t stick through to overtime, though. With only five points in the extra period and just two in the last 2:30, the Pelicans gave punters an early reminder of how volatile the NBA can be.

Rockets win 130-122.

Fading The Lakers Early

The Lakers have started the season 1-1 straight up and against the spread. However, history suggests they’ll soon spend a lot of time below .500 against the spread.

In the ten seasons prior to this one, the Lakers have combined for the worst record against the spread in the NBA, covering just 45.5% of their games. Interestingly enough, LeBron James teams have covered at just 45.6% since 2013.

With LeBron James and the addition of Anthony Davis adding to the already hyped Lakers, there will be numerous opportunities to fade them this season. They’re a favourite for casual fans and punters, which means the underdogs will carry the value more often than not.

Road Dogs Start Strong

It’s been a nice start to the NBA season for road underdog backers.

Home teams have tipped the season off going 10-18 against the spread. Of the 18 home favourites, only six have covered the spread.

It’s a trend that is sure to correct itself, but there may be some value in road dogs for some time yet. For many, home favourites feels the safer pick. However, the results to start the season speak for themselves.

Championship Odds Update

It’s early days, but we’re revisiting the NBA Championship market now that we’ve seen teams on the floor.

The Clippers are the $4.40 favourites despite their recent loss to the Suns. Regardless of that L, they’ve looked outstanding to start the year and still have Paul George to come.

The Lakers are on the second line of betting at $5. While they’ve not displayed quite the same level of cohesion, the potential is sky-high for this team. LeBron James and Anthony Davis will be unstoppable by playoff time.

In the East, the Bucks come in at $6. We may yet see that price drift out as the Bucks adjust to a handfull of changes and navigate a possible slow start. Defending MVP, Giannis Antetokounmpo, has caught fire early but is having foul trouble. Meanwhile, the 76ers have got straight into their work with back-to-back wins to be on the fourth line of betting at $7.50.

NBA ATS Standings

The Kings have been the most disappointing team to start this NBA season. They’re 0-3 straight up and against the spread after many tipped them to be in the playoff conversation. A bounce back is inevitable, but when?
