Final Thoughts: The Toronto Raptors took the first step towards history in Game 1 of the NBA Finals. Can they put the acid on the Golden State Warriors further by going up 2-0?
In the franchise’s first NBA Finals match, the Raptors carved out a 118-109 series-opening win in Toronto.
Forward duo Kawhi Leonard (23 pts, 8 reb, 5 ast) and Pascal Siakam (32 pts, 8 reb, 5 pts) paved the way to victory.
Steph Curry – who stepped up with 36-plus points in all four wins of the Warriors’ sweep of the Blazers – put up 34 points, 5 rebounds and 5 assists in a losing effort. Draymond Green had a triple-double (10 pts, 10 reb, 10 ast).
But the Raptors’ defensive pressure on Curry and outstanding outside shooting was too much for the two-time defending champs.
Meanwhile, injured superstar Kevin Durant will not return for Game 2.
Leading into this season, Golden State were on an eight-match winning streak against Toronto. But the Raptors won both pre-Christmas encounters – a 131-128 OT victory at home and a 20-point success in Oakland.
The Raptors are now 9-2 at Air Canada Centre in these NBA playoffs, winning their last six straight.
Leonard invariably produces, but whether the Raptors can get a repeat performance from the likes of Siakam and co. is questionable.
Lean towards the hosts – who are $1.73 favourites – but expect Game 2 to go down to the wire.
