Final Thoughts: The Portland Trail Blazers received a brutal Game 1 reality check from the Golden State Warriors. Are they any chance of heading back home with the Western Conference Finals square at 1-all.
The Warriors breezed to a 116-94 victory in the series opener – largely thanks to a 39-23 final quarter.
Steph Curry continued his return to form with 36 points, 7 assists and 6 rebounds. Klay Thompson chipped in with 26 points. The pair have stepped up in timely fashion with Kevin Durant sidelined – and KD is set to miss Game 2.
Blazers back-court duo Damian Lillard and CJ McCollum could only muster 36 points between them. ‘Dame’ shot a dismal 4-for-12 from the field.
After eliminating the Thunder 4-1 in the First Round, the Trail Blazers came from 3-2 down to beat the Nuggets in seven games in a wild Semi-finals series. The Warriors were taken to six games by both the Clippers and the Rockets – but they are on track to make short work of Portland.
The teams met in the 2016 and ’17 playoffs, with the Warriors surging to 4-1 and 4-0 series results respectively.
But the Blazers have won four of their last seven games against the Warriors. They snapped a 13-game losing streak at Oracle Arena with a 110-109 overtime win in late-December.
There were some ominous signs for Portland in Game 1. They should be considerably better this time around, but it seems unlikely they will improve enough to cover the same start they were afforded in the series opener.
