While Sydney provided the headline act, Victorian racing fans were treated to a fascinating program at Moonee Valley where several spring hopefuls continued their preparations towards bigger targets. With the Memsie Stakes only a week away, many trainers used the meeting as an opportunity to put the finishing touches on their carnival plans, and the performances throughout the card suggested Victoria’s spring ranks are shaping up nicely. The emergence of Cosmic Crusader over the previous fortnight has added another layer of intrigue to the season and there was no shortage of discussion about how the country’s leading weight-for-age horses will match up once the major races begin in earnest.
Western Australian racing also delivered an entertaining afternoon as preparations continued for the coming Ascot season. The local feature performers who dominated the Belmont winter carnival are beginning to establish themselves as horses to watch when the major races return later in the year.
