Palmerbet Sports Team’s Best of the Day preview tries to find the back of the net with W-League tips for Thursday’s pivotal clash between Sydney FC and Melbourne City.

History: Played 7: Melbourne City 5 V Sydney 1 (1 Draw)

Last Meeting: November 2, 2018: Melbourne City 3 d Sydney 1 at AAMI Park

Final Thoughts: Melbourne City have defeated Sydney FC in two of the last three W-League grand finals. But the Sky Blues will be looking to officially end City’s title defence when the last round gets underway on Thursday.

Sydney FC sit third with six wins and a draw from 11 matches. Their semi-finals spot is assured but they still have plenty to play for, sitting only one point behind the two teams above them.

Fifth-placed Melbourne City are three points adrift of Sydney and fourth-placed Perth. They would need a win by a five-goal margin to leapfrog Sydney, while they require a six-goal for-and-against swing to get past the Glory (who face the top-ranked Victory).

Sydney are unbeaten in their last four. They beat Newcastle, Western Sydney and Brisbane by a combined 9-2, before drawing 2-2 with the Victory last week.

Caitlin Foord notching back-to-back braces against Wanderers and the Roar.

City’s 1-0 losses to the Victory and Roar saw them slide down the standings. But a 4-0 thrashing of the Jets in their last outing saw them retain a glimmer of hope.

Yukari Kinga scored a goal in each half of the Newcastle rout.

Melbourne City have an outstanding 5-1-1 record against Sydney since joining the W-League for the 2014-15 season. They were 2-0 victors in last year’s grand final and prevailed again in an early rematch, romping to a 3-1 win in Round 2.

Jasmyne Spencer completed a hat-trick by the hour mark for City.

Melbourne City will fight hard to stay alive but we’re favouring a low-scoring draw between two quality sides.
