Bolting In – The Wrap Up – Memsie Stakes Review

Matty Stewart, Adam McGrath and Chris Roots wrap up a fascinating day of spring racing on The Wrap Up, with Caulfield hosting the opening Group 1 of the Melbourne carnival and Rosehill delivering several performances that could shape the major three-year-old and weight-for-age races over the coming months. While there were strong expectations heading into Saturday, few could have predicted just how dominant Beiwacht would be in the Memsie Stakes, while Sydney unearthed another genuine spring star as Guest House announced himself as a major player for the carnival ahead.

The boys start with the Group 1 Memsie Stakes, where Beiwacht delivered a career-defining performance to stamp himself as one of Australia’s premier 1400-metre horses. Settling in front under a perfectly judged Nash Rawiller ride, the Chris Waller-trained four-year-old controlled the race from the outset before putting the field away with a devastating turn of foot in the straight. Against a field containing 27 combined Group 1 victories, Beiwacht simply outclassed his rivals, recording his third Group 1 win and defeating the ever-reliable Mr Brightside by three lengths with Cosmic Crusader running a brave third after suffering interference at a crucial stage.

Attention then shifts to several of the runners behind the placegetters, including Treasurethe Moment, who resumed with a solid fourth placing, and favourite Jimmysstar, whose disappointing performance raises questions heading deeper into the carnival. The boys assess which runners may improve sharply second-up, who appeared to lack fitness late in the race, and which horses can still emerge as genuine spring contenders despite the result.

Over at Rosehill, the discussion centres around one of the most exciting performances of the afternoon, with Golden Slipper winner Guest House returning in explosive fashion in the San Domenico Stakes. The highly regarded colt resumed with a brilliant victory in track-record time, immediately strengthening his claims as one of the standout three-year-olds in training. The boys discuss what the performance means for the upcoming Golden Rose and whether Guest House has the talent to develop into one of the headline acts of the entire Spring Carnival.

The panel also highlights several other runners from both Caulfield and Rosehill who caught the eye and could be worth following in the coming weeks. As always at this stage of the season, there were horses returning from spells, runners looking for further ground and a handful of unlucky performances that may prove profitable next start. With major races now arriving every weekend, identifying those future winners becomes increasingly important.
