Matty Stewart is back alongside Adam McGrath and Chris Roots as the Victorian Spring Carnival takes centre stage with Memsie Stakes Day at Caulfield, the first Group 1 feature of the Melbourne season and a race that has historically launched some of the biggest spring campaigns in the country. With a fascinating mix of proven stars, emerging weight-for-age performers and returning champions, Saturday’s meeting offers an early glimpse at the horses that could shape the Cox Plate, King Charles III Stakes, Champions Stakes and more.

The boys dive straight into the Group 1 Memsie Stakes, where an intriguing field will assemble over 1400 metres. Much of the attention centres around defending champion Treasurethe Moment, who returns to the scene of her victory twelve months ago and looks perfectly placed to launch another major campaign. Drawn ideally in barrier six with Damian Lane aboard, she arrives with a profile that demands respect and will once again have plenty of supporters.

Standing in her way is the evergreen Mr Brightside, one of Australian racing’s most admired performers. The former Memsie winner returns for another spring assault and boasts an outstanding first-up record. The boys discuss whether the veteran can produce another fresh performance in what shapes as a crucial stepping stone towards bigger targets later in the carnival.

The conversation also turns to a group of exciting challengers headed by one of Adam and Matt’s favpourites, Jimmysstar, whose best weight-for-age form makes him one of the major winning chances if he resumes at his peak. The team also breaks down the prospects of Cosmic Crusader, who arrives in outstanding form after successive victories at Caulfield this preparation, along with Chris Waller’s powerful team featuring Angel Capital, Birdman, Beiwacht, Autumn Boy and Buckaroo. With several of these runners viewed as genuine spring prospects, Saturday’s race could have significant implications for the months ahead.

To finish the show, the boys lock in their Best Bets, and value selections. If you’re having a bet on Memsie Stakes Day or looking to get ahead of the biggest storylines before the Melbourne spring truly explodes, Bolting In has everything you need for a massive day of racing at Caulfield.
